The only elaborate puzzle was the books one, and they went overboard with it by not providing any hints about how it works. I'm also not a fan of how almost all enemies ambush you by surprise when entering a room or activating a contraption, instead of just roaming around the levels. I'd also say the skillset isn't well balanced, since dual wielding pistols is pretty much broken once you find two good ones. Something that I really liked was that the secret chests provide some really unique and awesome loot that compels you to look for them, instead of just slightly better items. Levels are varied enough given that it all takes place inside a tower, and there are also some unique "set pieces" that add spice to the adventure (e.g. a gas filled section that requires you to wear a hazmat suit instead of all your equipment, forcing you to use the environment to kill your enemies). Still, a good game and worth a playthrough if you are into grid-based dungeon crawlers.
