Not bad, but not good either

The atmosphere is there, and the environment looks kinda cool for a quest game. I also liked the immersiveness of using your tools, even just having to grab the pack to recharge the light is a small action that you have to repeat that helps setting the survival tone and makes the game feel more VR.

But the story is just bad and uninteresting, beside the initial lore being intriguing. And the level design is too linear. The stealth was basically not an option in my opinion, or too boring to perform. You have to wait too much, not enough tools to stealth, and, for example, the items to make noise, just didn't seem to work how I expected them.

I did have some fun, but overall I think it's not that worth it.

Starts Strong, Ends Wrong!

Actually more like 2.5 stars but I am being generous and rounding up.

I did not like the flatscreen Metro series of games but I felt the same way about Rocksteady Batman and I loved the VR version so I figured "why not?" Well... this is why not:

It starts strong, the story is whatever but the game is made by the people who made the fun VR L4D-like "After The Fall" so the gameplay/gunplay is solid. The gameplay is nice. It is moving.

Then the spiders come. They are an annoying enemy. Then the battle encounters get longer and longer and just feel like random wave shooter segments. Then there are "on-rail" segments that go on a bit too long. THEN there are mandatory STEALTH SEGMENTS that are opaque in view and coherence!

The last third just repeats the most annoying parts of the game. I HATED the last third and had to power through! It really soured me on something I was quite enjoying initially.

(Played on Meta Quest 3)

After a few more sessions, I'm coalescing into an opinion of the game.

I think it's overall decent. Interactions are engaging enough without being too onerous and clunky. I like the voice acting and writing fine. It's a bit uneven; some of the dialogue is wonderfully naturalistic and believable. Back and forth between the main character and Yana or Max are great. Enemy chatter is less great; sometimes thre's just too much swearing that reeks of overwriting.

Gameplay is also fine. Sneaking around can be fun, especially with physical crouching, but it's a bit limited due to the simplistic enemy AI. The game gives you a bunch of tools and weapons but nothing is as powerful as sneaking from behind and punching guys in the head for a one-punch-kill and no ammo usage. There's also these dogs enemies that run around and do hit-and-run attacks. They were scary the first few times until I realised that the best strategy was to wait in the corner and shoot at them when they come at you.

One issue is that there is too few interactions with the environment. One of the most fun In Half Life Alyx was just rummaging around desks, …

One issue is that there is too few interactions with the environment. One of the most fun In Half Life Alyx was just rummaging around desks, opening drawers looking for resources. Here, while there's a lot of set dressing, most of it is non-interactive so the world feels very static and unresponsive.

So far, this game's pretty cool. Combat is tense and stealth is nice; I love the crouching in real life to give my legs a bit of a workout. I was surprised by the writing and voice acting too. Pretty solid overall.

On the right side of the screen where it says New Releases, I saw Metro Awakening and didn't see the VR underneath and I almost shat myself because I thought Metro 4 was coming! Boooo! lol
