Of the instant-retry-em-ups (think Celeste, Super Meat Boy, Trials) it's one of the more sedate. Progress is as much about working out the quickest route, which might not be the shortest, as it is pure execution. The feeling of carving through the snow is lovely, and the trails are a brilliant visual representation of learning each course, and a guide for subsequent runs.
The floating camera recalls Micro-Machines or Mashed, and works to make the mountains feel grand and appropriately lonely. Sometimes coming towards the camera might feel like an arbitrary and annoying challenge but it's a game built on repetition, you learn the courses almost by heart anyway.
I'm not sure the structure works. There are 3 challenges for the blue and black runs of each course that emphasise speed and/or number of retries. The sedate mood on the mountain is great, but this low-key approach to single-player feels a little flat. Perhaps it's meant to be merely an intro to multi-player, but I have zero interest in that. A lovely core, but it's missing something.
Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders is the kind of game where the skier’s skill mirrors your own with the controller, exceedingly challenging yet deeply rewarding once mastered. Although the experience was great, there are some structural defects that can make success a little frustrating at times.
