Flat Kingdom is filled with fun platforming action, puzzles and some Metroidvania elements. It also features a unique combat system! Instead of directly attacking your foes, you’ll have to touch them while transformed in the correct shape to beat them! Kinda like a rock-paper-scissor game. Every shape in Flat Kingdom beats the opposite, so sharp triangles can defeat the soft circles, heavy squares beat the fragile triangles and squishy circles can triumph over the slow squares. Fall flat

Flat Kingdom has a nice little shapeshifting mechanic that should have been used just for puzzles but unfortunately was used for combat as well. The puzzles work, the combat is rather tedious. You walk up to an enemy and press the appropriate button.

What kills the game are the details. I honestly got stuck early on because i couldn't jump on a plan and i thought there had to be some other solution. Turns out, the jump simply doesn't make sense and only works some of the time. Another problem is that shapeshifting isn't instant, so i got hurt a couple of times because of the delay. Combined with the combat it really slows the game down. Also, who makes a menu in which you have to confirm selections with Space? And why can't you bring up the menu while playing the game? Are you supposed to always use Alt+F4? Huh?

I wanted to give Flat Kingdom 3 stars since it's a pretty decent platformer game. However, I had two huge issues with it:

  1. Recycling all the old bosses in front of the final boss didn't sit well with me, as I got the impression the devs wanted to stretch playtime without having actual ideas
  2. I could not finish the game due to a game-breaking bug during the fight with the final boss. I had to Alt+F4 out of the game 8 times before I got really frustrated and gave up trying

Due to this, it's sadly down to 2 stars for Flat Kingdom.
