Hope is Gone is such a hidden gem! It fits snugly between two other games I love - Nightmare of Decay and Dead Beacon. All 3 games are super simple survival horror games with laughably low polygons, jank that only an indie game could self-publish, over the top gore and wacky horror - and so much charm.
This game takes place in an otherworld as you wake up from a coma. The story is strongly inspired by Silent Hill, but the gameplay feels way to B-movie and kitschy to avoid Resident Evil comparisons. You explore an open village, a hospital, and a warehouse - trying to find your husband and return home.
It’s just great. It’s got simple but fun combat with way over the top gore, classic inventory puzzles, and exploration. My only real complaint is the lack of a map - but I managed. The game took about 5 hours, so for a 2.99 price tag it’s an absolute steal. If you enjoy Dead Beacon or Nightmare of Decay, this isn’t ~quite~ as good but it’s very close and I loved every second.
