Sonic Adventure gameplay perfected

Coming off of a playthrough of Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, I found Spark the Electric Jester 3 on steam. There was a lot of praise for its Sonic-like gameplay, so I jumped on it.

The camera is much better. There's separate difficulty modes for platforming and fighting which makes it more accessible. The fighting is much better than Sonic adventure too, there are actual moves and combos. Wall running is a cool addition.

In Area 2 there was a classic video game "elevator" level, I loved it. My least favorite levels were the "collect all 10 coin" levels. After Area 2 I think the game really picks up and gets good. The last two levels were a bit of a gauntlet, and the story gets a bit intense at the end, but overall a great game.

This is an indie platformer that takes very blatant inspiration from the 3D Sonic games. Many fans on Steam seem to believe that it’s as good as or better than the best of those—that I can’t comment on since I’ve only dabbled in those games here and there, but it’s pretty fun. My favorite thing about those games is just when you’re blasting forward at super speed like a roller coaster, and this game captures that with a nice feeling of control and precision. There are definitely parts where I struggle to get what I’m doing wrong or right with my inputs, but usually it flows in a nice and intuitive way. It has a bit more combat focus than you’d expect, and I’d call the combat “just ok” personally. I’m less into levels where you’re hunting for special coins or something, but it’s all at least decent. Worth looking into if you like this sort of thing.
