This is my favorite of the new puppet/animatronic themed horror trend. It is a direct spoof and homage to the resident evil series, with more than a few direct nods and references. But what keeps it all together is the solid fundamentals that make it a good survival horror in its own right.
The level design and puzzles are just really fun. The way you weave in and out of areas, slowly making your way forward, defeating and restraining enemies, and solving puzzles is ripped right out of the best of of Resident Evil. The puppet theming never gets in the way of the fun, though it never becomes scary as a result.
The map is great, showing which areas are fully completed and not. There’s inventory management as well, and even some optional items and areas. In all, I had a really great time.
I would have preferred third person, fixed cameras, and a little bit of minor bug patching, but this rose way above my expectations and I really do recommend it for a light but competent survival horror romp.
Where it succeeds best, however, is in being a terrific introductory horror game. Whether or not you’re a youth whose parents disapprove of gore or if you’re just one to hide beneath a blanket when a zombie appears on screen, My Friendly Neighborhood provides the depth of the Resident Evil experience without any of the violence. Not only does it fill an important niche, it proves that this sort of horror game can stand on its own without any of the blood.
