Fun Sim that Can Get Repetitive

Majesty is such a product of its time in PC gaming, but I love it for that.

The art design is great, the voice design is fun and goofy, the maps' quests often humorous, and then strategy is pretty solid with a lot of great choices.

I played about 60% of these maps and each of them forces the player to adjust to some new components or challenges. For the age of the game there is also a surprising amount of enemies, with some pretty different behaviors.

My biggest complaint is that after like 10 missions, the game does start to get a bit repetitive. In general I leaned into the same heroes, buildings, and even building order.

Great Accessible Single Player RTS

I don't play rts because it seems to be all about following a set plan and gaining seconds over your opponent. Majesty doesn't require that level of precision. I've only beaten the main game and am around a third of the way through The Northern Expansion, but I feel like I can be creative. One time I'll take barbarians, one time I'll go Krypta, this map seems easier without Rangers, etc. I can play a scenario once, realize what I did wrong, change up my strategy, try again, repeat until victory. It's fun.

And I can't micromanage much in Majesty because my heroes do whatever they want. All I can do is decide what heroes to hire, put out flags to encourage them to do things, and there are some spells I can cast to do some micro stuff, but overall this is a mostly macro game. That being said, you're not completely fucked if you build the wrong buildings. Oftentimes you can change your strategy midgame and go for a different plan and recover. If you have cash reserves and the vast majority of your kingdom is destroyed, you can rebuild and maybe this time you'll build more defense …

If you have cash reserves and the vast majority of your kingdom is destroyed, you can rebuild and maybe this time you'll build more defense or decide to go for Warriors of Discord rather than Paladins or you'll focus more on revenue.

Majesty is not completely forgiving, but I feel like it's very well designed so that the challenge is fun and you usually don't have to spend too much time playing once you've already figured it out. I don't know how well I'm describing what it is that I enjoy about the game, but even if you're not an rts fan (or I suppose especially if you're not an rts fan since I'm not), I encourage you to check it out. It's on steam with updates so it doesn't feel aged in the slightest.
