Chou Soujuu Mecha MG is a 2006 Nintendo DS mecha action game developed by Sandlot, the studio behind the Earth Defense Force series, and published by Nintendo. It combines the developer's aptitude for larger-than-life spectacle with one of the most innovative and fun uses of the touch screen in the DS library: in addition to standard movement with the D-Pad, each of the game's 100+ playable mecha has its own unique "cockpit" controlled with the touch screen. The game was mentioned in the Super Smash Bros. series, under the officially romanized title of Chosoju Mecha MG.

It gets better once you understand it.
This review is for the Nintendo DS version

Years ago, I played this totally untranslated. As a fan of anything with a mecha on it, the important part for me was not the story but the OMG YOU CAN PRESS BUTTONS AND LEVERS AND STUFF, so I quite enjoyed it even if I had to skip every single cutscene.

Now that an unofficial translation patch exists, I replayed it actually understanding what the heck was going on, and I have to say, it's been nice feeling again that "YAY BUTTONS" experience. While the story isn't the most original ever, and the game itself ends up feeling somewhat repetitive (I hate the race missions. With all my soul) it is still a fun experience, and I think very, very few games knew how to use the bottom screen of the DS as wonderfully as this one does.

Yay, robots!
