Kirby also gets an “inhale everything” ability that can be used in specific parts of each stage to help him clear anything blocking his path. As always, Kirby has the power to inhale his enemies and take on their abilities. Each copy ability can let him do a variety of actions and moves, depending on which buttons are pressed. Kirby: Triple Deluxe includes a huge number of collectibles for players to find, from hidden 8-bit keychains to Sun Stones. Fun lil Kirby game as always. Enjoyed Dedede's rush, especially final boss fight. Good tunes too. Might go back and do all Kirby games without abilities at some point. Onto Planet Robobot next!

It's Fine I Guess

If you enjoy Kirby you'll enjoy this game. It's a reasonably polished 3DS game with everything you'd expect from a Kirby game.

However, it just strikes me as somewhat bland; the game is too easy, has slightly dull level design and is littered with unnecessary gimmicks.

My first impression of this game is wow does it ever suffer from being a 3DS game, it’s fun sure but what’s with all the weird perspective stuff and dumb gyro gimmicks?

In 2014 Hal Laboratory released Kirby: Triple Deluxe, the first Kirby game for the Nintendo 3Ds, the spiritual sequel of Kirby's Return to Dream Land, sharing many elements from that game.

Title Screen.

The main difference is that instead of the Super Abilities, Kirby has the Hypernova, an ability you get in certain levels that lets you inhale many enemies and obstacles that would be impossible to destroy otherwise. It is a decent gimmick which gives the gameplay a nice change of pace, although it doesn't feel that different from the Super Abilities.

Hypernova.

Another difference is the type of collectibles you can get, which are divided in two: The Sun Stones, that work in the same way as Energy Spheres/Crystal Shards/Rainbow Drops/Etc., and the Keychains, that are totally optional and can be obtained in many ways. All the keychains are elements from previous games, like items and enemies, so they are nice fanservice, but getting all of them (necessary for the 100%) is a pretty tedious process that I don't recommend unless you are a completionist.

Collectables

Aside from the main mode, there are the subgames, which have the classic Arena and True Arena along three new ones:

Kirby Fighters, where you fight against other Kirbies in a setting similar to Smash Bros., Dedede's Drum Dash, a rhythm game where you play as Dedede and try to get a high score while jumping rhythmically in drums, and Dededetour, an extra mode similar to Meta Knightmare Ultra, where you also play as Dedede and the objetive is completing the main mode, which is compressed in only six very long levels (each one lasting at least 15 minutes). Thankfully, there are save spots after each boss and midboss, so you don't have to complete them in one sitting.

All of them are worth checking, as they are pretty polished and add a lot of content that feel different from the normal gameplay, similar to the subgames of Kirby: Super Star Ultra.

Subgames

In conclusion, Kirby: Triple Deluxe is a entertaining game, but it doesn't innovate a lot and feels pretty similar to most entries of the franchise, so I definitely recommend it to people that like the easy and simplistic nature of Kirby.

  • 2D platformer with the classic Kirby mechanic of absorbing enemy powers
  • Boring level design, general lack of challenge
  • A lot of collectables can only be picked up by having the right power-up upon arriving, or randomly guessing which path isn't a no-return checkpoint
  • Bonus rhythm mini-game is more fun than the main game
  • Polished game overall

Kirby Triple Deluxe was a pretty average and decent Kirby game for me. There are definitely things the game does well and parts that I enjoyed. For example, the colors were vibrant, the animations excellent, and the levels well-themed. The use of space and multiple planes was actually a very interesting and well-executed mechanic and I can imagine it looking amazing in 3D (I played this on the New 2DS XL). I liked some of the new copy abilities (though Circus was by far the worst power) and appreciated the variety of moves you could perform with each ability. For example, some moves had at least a dozen different button combos that would perform various attacks. I liked the sections that took your ability away temporarily, forcing you to go through as normal Kirby for a while. I also appreciated the item space on the touch screen--it was nice to store an extra health boost for quirky boss fights, though I rarely needed it until the end, when multi-stage fights got extremely tough. Strangely enough, many bosses were actually easier when using the standard "inhale stars and spit them out" strategy rather than trying to get close enough with a copy ability. I am still split on the Hyper Nova ability, though. It's clever and had some interesting applications, but it kind of just felt like pressing B in front of different kinds of obstacles.

I think my favorite part of the game was the "extra mode," Dedede Tour. I thought it was much more fun than the normal mode, mostly because there weren't any distractions and Dedede's moveset is excellent. As far as extra mini-games go, the rhythm-based one was tricky but oddly satisfying once I got the hang of it. I confess to not having tried the Kirby Fighters, but apparently it was popular enough to get a spin-off.

Based on these aspects alone I would recommend the game to Kirby fans, especially since it's worth the $20 price tag you'll find on used copies. However, I think there are much better Kirby games and I do have some gripes about Kirby Triple Deluxe.

My main gripe is with the collectibles. In past Kirby games, collectibles are either a) challenging or b) worthwhile. Sure, the sun stones unlock extra stages, which is great, but it was completely unnecessary to lock the boss fights behind gathering them since they were so blatantly easy. A rare couple were a bit tricky and/or frustrating, but half the time the game just gave them to you for free. For a perfectionist like me, I spent half the game overthinking where they might be hiding based on my experience with past Kirby games, which took away from my enjoyment of the game. Again, the extra mode was so much more fun because I wasn't worried about the collectibles and could just enjoy speeding through the game. If this sounds like a personal problem, I admit that it is. However, the other collectibles, keychains, are completely pointless. Not only are they randomly generated, which makes getting them all a matter of luck, they don't do anything. They're basically just legacy icons from older games. That's it. If they were more like Smash Bros. trophies with information or trivia, or if there was some sort of mildly interesting activity you could do with them, that might make me feel more inclined to get them all. But they just kind of sit there on your save file. Personally, I love Kirby collectibles that change your skin color, or give you new abilities, backgrounds, maps, anything useful.

You can absolutely enjoy the game without worrying about collectibles or my petty grievances, which is why I still recommend it, as it offers some fun gameplay moments. It just felt a bit shallow and artificially padded.

Plataformas Master Class

As always Kirby is super cute, and the majority of the game is a lot of fun. The tilt action puzzles and combat really drag the game down and the final boss level leaves a lot to be desired. The game feels spot on as a fun entry game for kids yet has a final boss that will leave new players struggling while seasoned players will wish for something with a bit more fun. Essentially, the final boss uncomfortably occupies a liminal space As something simultaneously too hard and too easy. It is hard for new players who will struggle with the timing and movements. I can see young players or casual gamers finding their way to the final boss and suddenly hitting a difficulty spike that is both unexpected and unenjoyable. Yet the boss is also too easy, uninspired and dull to give experienced players a sense of satisfaction. It's as if Hal struggled with committing to making the final boss easy enough for kids to match the rest of the game and made it just hard enough to alienate new players while offering nothing of substance to the rest of the gaming crowd. It's disappointing and leaves me hesitant to recommend Kirby Triple Deluxe to friends that just want some casual platforming fun.

Overall I enjoyed the game, but Triple Deluxe isn't likely to top my Kirby chart.

Not sure why I took a break from this, it's terrific! The "hypernova" power-up is kind of a gimmick, but a really fun and silly one. The rest of the game is probably the most modern take on the "classic" Kirby formula, and a nice compliment to this year's less traditional Rainbow Curse on Wii U.
