If gamers are willing to adjust to the flick targeting system and forgive the poor framerate, it has a lot to offer in terms of gameplay, story, and sound. I was able to ignore these technical shortcomings in most areas and enjoy the excellent cut-scenes and character development.

Very good game with great story. If it wasn't for bugs, could have spawned a blockbuster franchise. Powers were fun to use

From the moment of starting the game I was already met with some annoyances:

  • It crashed when I tried to play over my monitor/TV. It's an older Samsung HD TV. I could try fiddling with the settings on the game.
  • Controller support was non existent for menus. Gah

  • It crashed when I tried to play over my monitor/TV. It's an older Samsung HD TV. I could try fiddling with the settings on the game.
  • Controller support was non existent for menus. Gah
  • Controls are terrible when flying the ship. I'll probably try again but using the right toggle stick changes direction but acts more like a camera controller. Usually that stick changes views.
  • The characters right from the beginning are a couple of pompous d bags.

Is it even worth continuing with this? It would be better to play on my TV because the graphics are actually pretty nice for the era. I was very impressed with the opening scene with the aliens. They reminded me of cenobites from Hellraiser.

The entirety of the cast of this game is unbearable. I can only hope that they go through some kind of collective arc where they stop being incorrigible frat-boy douches and become interesting in any capacity.

But hope won't be enough to get me to try this one again.

They won't let you play for the first 40 minutes so you don't discover right away how bad it is

Advent Rising is a boring and dated TPS that takes a cue from Daiktana by refusing to let you play the damn game. Advent Rising is a boring and dated TPS that takes a cue from Daiktana by refusing to let you play the damn game. Even when i skipped most cinematics it took over half an hour to get to play the bloody game. Before that time there are constant awful cinematics, a boring pointless tutorial and several parts where you aren't free to walk normally (locked doors/carrying someone).

Combat itself is dreadful. You aim your two fully automatic weapons in the general direction of the enemy and click fire. Yes, this game manages to make dual-wielding rocket-launchers boring. Apparently you get magic powers later on, but who cares if the core gameplay sucks?

Found a sealed copy for $10 so it picked it up. One of the original Xbox games that I always wanted to play. I find big flops interesting. Also like the history behind the $1,000,000 contest that never was.
