georgeypoorgey's review of Nidhogg 2

I love that Niddhogg 2, the most disgusting looking game of all time (feel free to @ me grosser games) uses Roman numerals to elucidate the fact that it is a sequel.

There is almost nothing you can do in this game. There is one mode that you can play against a computer, against a stranger, or against a friend. You seemingly don't earn anything and no new mechanics are introduced as you play.

And yet this game is a 4/5 because the one thing you do is so immensely fun. It essentially comes down to trying to get past your opponent or kill them trying. It is so pure and simple that most people I've shown the game were laughing or screaming within a minute.

The game reaches its peak when you kill your opponent on accident because they ran into your sword. Your grotesque Homer Simpson-esque avatar stands still as your opponent flails impaled with purple goo shooting out of their body.

It is such weird, freakish, goofy fun that I honestly don't get the video game player that doesn't immediately love this game.

4/5. Just wish there were more stages and costumes.

Nidhogg 2 - Longer and Seductively Frantic

This sequel did exactly what it needed to do - the same basic gameplay is present, dueling with weapon-based combat across several stages in a back-and-forth gaining ground style, but WHOA has everything been improved.

Only four stages? Make them 10. Need a more unique style? This strange, seemingly gross and psychedelic new look with Muppet-style fighters seems off-putting at first but drags you in with how gorgeously detailed and entertaining it all is.

Only one sword? Make it four different weapons with their own playstyle - rapier, longsword, bow, and dagger. Weapons are randomized so you won't know what you'll be getting next, making combat chaotic and incredibly satisfying. This results in intense, frantic battles that are fun for an arcade-style single player and an absolute joy for local co-op. Seriously, for the local co-op alone this game is worth the buy.

Do you have friends? Do those friends want a hectic versus game to play with friends but shy from traditional fighting games? Do they want to see fun stabby moments and fierce playstyles arise in a pinch? This is the game. This is THE multiplayer game you want to fight someone with.

So this game is "free" for a couple days on Steam, like, you can play it for a few days. I don't know much about it, never played the first one. But just loaded it up on a whim, and played it with my friend (couch/local-multiplayer) and we were shrieking and laughing like maniacs. Never had so much fun in a local multiplayer game since I used to play MarioKart64 with my housemates.

Highly recommend checking this out, especially since you can play for free at the moment. Was an unexpected surprise. I think I'll buy the full version to play when I have a friend over.

Also the art/music for this game is gorgeous:
