Does anyone want a Steam copy of The Red Lantern? I have an extra copy that I can share thanks to Humble Choice.

  • Choose-your-own-adventure-game with resource management mechanics. Very powerful tools can be (randomly found) and make subsequent runs much easier.
  • Between randomized events and random outcome for some decisions, player has frustratingly little control over success/failure
  • Weak writing and repetitive voice lines
  • Slow and clunky
  • Cute dogs ♥

When i first saw The Red Lantern i thought "hey, a sled game, looks like it would be nice for a very calm day", and it was. But what i didn't see was that it had taken some very light inspiration from roguelites in the way that the player do runs and start over if there's a loss.

The game is built on exploration and experiencingstuff. Exploring all the options in the game will end with you having a stronger start next run. So this takes inspiration from the kinds of roguelites where you will grow "stronger" over the runs so the runs gets easier with time.

The game is pretty relaxed in how you play it and how it encourage you to explore all options. Sometimes options doesn't lead you to where you'd expect. The game also has pretty funny dialogue here and there which is pretty good for taking off the edge of the harsh enviroment the player experience.

For those who cares too much for our animal companions, there is an option to protect your dog friends in a way.

Overall a charming experience of a game that offers some challenge to begin with atleast. It's about exploring, and challenging yourself in a sense.

Have fun.
