Guilty Gear is a 2D fighting game, in which you can play as one of 10 very different kind of characters. There is a selection of fighters from Holy Order knights, Armed Air Force soldiers, Mafia members and mad scientists. Each character has his/her own storyline that will be fully revealed during the final showdown. In battles, you can charge up for special attacks, as well as perform Deathblow moves, which would kill the opponent instantly. You can either choose to finish the Arcade mode, challenge your friends to a Versus battle, or either train your skills out in the Training mode.

Guilty Gear: Rock n' Roll
I expected the first Guilty Gear to be just as unapproachable as its predecessors. Crazy mechanics? Funky combos? Sure, the original Guilty Gear has combos, but it's simple enough compared to its sequels that it's surprisingly approachable, along with some amazing style.

I expected the first Guilty Gear to be just as unapproachable as its predecessors. Crazy mechanics? Funky combos? Sure, the original Guilty Gear has combos, but it's simple enough compared to its sequels that it's surprisingly approachable, along with some amazing style.
Sometime in the future, a tournament is setup to stop an evil superweapon from resurrecting another superweapon (Testament resurrecting Justice), and the top fighters must compete to see who will save the world. The game is setup in a 2 out of 3 match format where players can do the usual fighting game moves (blocks, jumps, counters, combos). There are a couple of extra moves available. Along with (two?) taunts there's an ability to charge up a combo (difficult to pull off) and a real interesting thing - the Instant Kill.
Instant Kill can either be a bane to a fighter's existence or just the thing someone needs to get past the competition. Pressing two attack buttons then inputting a simple combo will Destroy the opponent, winning the match outright. Crazy as it is, there's nothing better than taking down an imposing opponent with a well timed Instant Kill.
Stylistically is where the game shines. Heavy metal rides along the soundtrack, and the 13 characters are all animated gorgeously, with crazy moves like creepy tall surgeons and scythe wielding goth demons. It's fantastic stuff, with a story that's light in this installment but shines through with some particularly interesting characters, at least moreso than Street Fighter.
In the end, Guilty Gear is a fighting game, but at the simplest Guilty Gear can get, it's an approachable and fun fighter with crazy moves and kickin' tunes.
