"A Year of Rain" is an unapologetic homage to Warcraft 3, so much so that it adheres to the classic formula with unwavering devotion. You'll find familiar elements like "5 workers per mine" and "4 skills per hero," as well as unmistakable visual cues that pay tribute to the Warcraft universe. However, there are a couple of areas where the game could have improved the overall experience. It would have been more enjoyable if it allowed for in-mission saves, as some missions can be quite lengthy and challenging. Additionally, the pathfinding in the game leaves much to be desired and can be described as nothing short of abysmal.
For me, the breaking point came during the 4th mission, which turned out to be yet another hero-centric adventure. Instead of the traditional strategy and base-building elements I was hoping for, I found myself deciphering boss telegraphs. This departure from the core real-time strategy gameplay was a disappointment.
In sum, "A Year of Rain" faithfully embraces its Warcraft 3 roots, but it falls short in terms of providing a truly engaging and varied gameplay experience. If you're seeking a more traditional real-time strategy game, this might not be worth your time.
