I wanted to play this before diving into Psychonauts 2. There isn't much to it. It is a barebones VR experience with some light puzzle solving. It integrates Raz's psychic powers well, using clairvoyance to teleport into the perspective of others. You also use telekinesis and pyrokinesis to interact with the environment. It is a short game - about 2 hours if you take your time.
It is still a trip worth taking due to the fun voice acting and interesting visuals. The Rhombus of Ruin is a great setting and looks amazing as you jump between the minds of fish to navigate it. There's also a touch of pathos towards the ending which is nice.
Like a lot of VR experiences it feels slight and underdeveloped, but still works as a stepping stone to what I imagine is a far more ambitious and substantial game. It's my understanding that the events of this game are important in Psychonauts 2, but there is nothing here that couldn't be summed up in a sentence or two of dialogue.
As it's common with a Psychonauts game, the main two legs that carry the experience are the story and the dialogue. The full Psychonauts humour is here. So are the crazy visuals and cartoony character models, which look equal times fun and horrifying in VR (seriously, seeing the size of Lili's head was unnerving at first).
Gameplay wise it´s a bit light. You 'move' by possessing characters, fishes, and rats, and you solve light puzzles with a couple of psi powers. Not a lot, but combined with the VR novelty is enough to form a decent third leg for a minimal stable chair.
Coming from Alyx it took a bit to adjust to the idea that I couldn't walk around in that lovely designed world. Once I got past that, I found a small, decent adventure game. Simple, easy, ultimately pretty thin but decently fun.
