I went into this game expecting something where I would die multiple times and give up in frustration but enjoy some challenge along the way. I don’t know if I should have more confidence in myself, I started on some easy difficulty, or the game isn’t quite as advertised, but I found it easier than expected. I usually died once on each boss then found the pattern and beat them. The most difficult part was probably navigating the quests as they’re often very little guidance.
I liked the aesthetic if the story wasn’t that spectacular. Both in tone and style, this feels heavily influenced by Edward Gorey. Things like bone saws and skin masks feel like they could come right out of the Gashlycrumb Tinies. The music completes the gothic atmosphere.
Overall, I give it ⅗. A passing grade but not much more. I played it on Switch and the load times could get rough but my expectations around that aren’t high.
Vigil demo just appeared on Steam:

Metroidvania salt & sanctuary type game. I've been really looking forward to this one.
It's not all doom and gloom; here's one to look forward to in 2020! Looks kinda like Salt and Sanctuary; I have high hopes for this.
