Lygodesma's review of Tooth and Tail

I am a little irritated by the mixed reception here. I think it's absolutely gorgeuos how Tooth and Tail revoluzionizes the RTS genre (revolution, yay!). Being able to control only one unit feels super nice and refreshing. Honestly, most RTS games do not enhance micro management anyway and most of us don't do it anyway. Why bother even giving you direct control over the units? I see this as an absolute win. It makes the game much smoother and less clumpsy than other RTS.

I mean ofc, this is no SC2 or WC3. I am just saying, most RTS don't require you to micro management at all, then why giving you unnecessarily control over sth that could work automatically anyway? Tooth and Tail lacks complexity though, there's not a lot of different units you can build, only one ressource... It's not to play for a long time. But it's absolutely quick and cool to play for a few hours, has a nice coop, awesome theme (animal revolution!) and I just hope the sequel will ad some depth to it.

Not my type of critters
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

I played my fair share of RTS games in my day...a long time ago. Having played a lot of Dune2, C&C and Warcraft, some Total Annihilation and Company of Heroes, I thought I had these game down pat. Apparently I don't, and it took some rodents to prove it. I found it difficult to wrap my head around what the right things to do are, and after breezing through the first 5 or so level, I got into increasing difficulties managing the next five. By the time I got to level...11(?) not only did I not figure out the right tactics (even after watching a couple of videos), I was also not having fun. Between the low-res graphics, the reduced control and the unappealing story, I decided to just stop.

Tooth and Tail: Lots of Teeth, Not a Lot of Fun
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Note: This covers most of the single-player campaign. A few matches were done in multiplayer.

Tooth and Tail is a pretty-looking game at first, with an effort to simplify RTS mechanics to create a fun and action packed rally of troops. That effort runs out of steam after a few multiplayer matches and grinds to a frustrating halt during the abysmal single player campaign.

In a society where anthropomorphic animals are facing extreme food shortages and resorting to cannibalism, a ruling class called the Civilized ultimately sought to control that system but faced skirmishes from revolutionary forces (Longcoats, Commonfolk) and the militant KSR. It appears to very much allude to or satire something about the Bolshevik Revolution but gets very difficult to follow and stumbles over whatever point it tries to make about these events up near the end. The game takes these vaguely Slavic influences and makes some fun music out of them as well as very beautiful looking pixel art, at least.

As for the gameplay, the controller is a rallying player who moves from point to point across the map. They may rally an entire army or a type of troop, so that troops with special abilities …

The game takes these vaguely Slavic influences and makes some fun music out of them as well as very beautiful looking pixel art, at least.

As for the gameplay, the controller is a rallying player who moves from point to point across the map. They may rally an entire army or a type of troop, so that troops with special abilities suited for breaking out prisoners or taking out troops can go forth. However, especially as the chaos breaks out in later campaign missions and some matches, there is no real way to control these troops to defend certain areas while rallying others like in other RTS games, making it often a rush across the map with the entire army having to lead behind. It doesn't help that movement is slow in this regard and gaining resources (food) makes it frustrating to make the most of one's time.

For multiplayer matches, there's a lot of random elements that make this a bit fun, but the standard single-player campaign is vicious with its difficulty. Often the player will be easily overwhelmed and find themselves unable to do anything other than crank down the difficulty slider unless a miracle happens. There are various mechanics and tips like drinking water to restore health, selling turrets to get food, scouting ahead on the map to pick up other resources and hire more troops but the sheer act of survival can be a painful one most of the time, especially near the end.

Tooth and Tail shines most when most of its content is ignored - as for its actual campaign design and its mildly confusing story, it might have been best off to keep this a multiplayer-only title.

Reminds me of '95

Back in the day, I was buying collections of ripped games. There were around 20 on the disk. There was no Internet, so I could only guess what the next game is about by its name. Also, since those where ripped games, they didn't contain any videos. So I was also half oblivious regarding their story.
That's exactly how Tooth and Tail feels like. Gameplay is a bit like Sacrifice, where you control your general using WASD, cannot control individual units, and mostly just hope that combination of your units will be better than your enemies.
Story is very ragged. Like they cut out half of it. So you see familiar characters moving between camps (there are communists, socialists and some other rabble), but you don't actually understand their motives. I'm a sucker for RTS games, so I still enjoyed it. But can hardly recommend it to anyone.

Cool aesthetic, quick matches, but I like my real time strategy games more strategic and less arcadey

I didn't realize how fun such a simple RTS could be until I played Tooth and Tail.

In my opinion, this is the best RTS game I've played since Starcraft: Brood War.

I played BW for over a decade. I even tried getting into WCG one year (I failed). I played other RTS games during that time, but none really caught my interest like BW did. After playing Starcraft: Remastered I realized that BW is too stressful for me these days. And, I don't have a desk to properly play at. I thought I'd drop playing RTS games for good. Until I played Tooth and Tail.

The single campaign was fun, but this game is clearly made for multiplayer. And it's fantastic. It can be a competitive game if you want it to be. And, if you don't try to be the best of the best all the time, there are a variety of strategies and tactics you can use to win. I can't stress enough how well designed this game is. Highly Recommended.

Interesting concept, but truthfully, I would have liked this as a more traditional RTS experience. Fun ending to the story, however. The difficulty was hard-hard and I had to lower it.
