Main game

This is a local multiplayer game (up to four players), the only single-player aspect is some trials, which are kind of more like tutorials to understand how the game works but you can get medals for how well you do at them. Or you can also play with just CPUs. I got the Humble Square Enix Collective Bundle 2020 so I could write some reviews for as many of the games as I could to help people decide whether they might want to pick it up or not. Since I don't have anyone to play with at the moment I played through all the trials and did all the different match types with CPUs for this review.
The best part about this game I think is the concept of the Godheads – the main match type is basically capture the flag except instead of a flag its the head of one of several different gods from different cultures, such as Zeus from Greece or Bastet from Egypt. The stages are also based on the locations come from. I like the theme and the idea of having each head have its own quirks or abilities so that the flag is a …

The stages are also based on the locations come from. I like the theme and the idea of having each head have its own quirks or abilities so that the flag is a functional part of the gameplay rather than just an object to be moved about.
Some of the heads are more appealing than others – the ones that explode on you or freeze you if you carry them for too long are kind of annoying but I think I'd have to play a few matches with real people to see if it can be fun to play a real match with those or not. I'm not sure how many different gods are featured as there are unlockable ones that I haven't unlocked, but there's an okay range already available when you first start.
The stages are also decent, they come in a range of sizes with some different features (like slopes and platforms to jump on) but nothing too crazy. I think I would have liked the stages to go even a little bigger but maybe logisitically that would be difficult with all the players on one screen. Also might have been nice to have more features and hazards in the environment to spice things up.
The visuals are very colorful and cartoony but the characters are pretty ugly. Which character you choose doesn't make a difference in gameplay but I think most people would want to choose the penguin or the skeleton because all the humans are just ugly (or maybe the ninja since most of his face is covered). The best thing visually are the Godheads except maybe Zeus who also has kind of an ugly face.
Overall it's just really meh – might be nice to just have some mindless fun with friends or family but nothing particularly exciting about it. The only match type out of the four that really makes a lot of sense to me is the capture the flag – the one where you try to hold the head for as long as you can is probably more fun if you do teams of two, but I prefer traditional capture the flag, and the ones where you just fight each other without the Godheads being involved at all to me are just kind of pointless because it's not like there are any combos or anything interesting about the attacks, there's just items to add some variety but those are also meh. Also I'm not sure if this is just the CPUs and the fact that I didn't adjust the CPU difficulty at all (didn't even check if you could) but I could kill them in one blow and they could kill me in one blow so if it's just like that universally, the fighting is really pointless (plus some of the stages they spawn you literally all right next to each other so the fight will be over pretty quickly lol).
Will probably play this with my sisters at some point and maybe edit/add on to this review when I know what the actual multiplayer is like since this is a multiplayer game. It's one of four games on the $1 minimum tier for the Humble Square Enix Collective Bundle 2020 thru May 5. Obviously if you're only looking for single-player games this won't be a game for you, but if you'd like to add it to your party game collection to keep your family, maybe your younger siblings, occupied during quarantine, why not.
