There are some elements to a good game here. I like the idea of exploring a weird post-apocalyptic ice world with weird monsters. I don't like the survival aspects of having to eat and build fires just to prevent yourself from losing health, and I really don't like having to start back at the beginning after every death. Particularly when your movement and combat is slow and clunky, yet you have to face lightning fast wolf type creatures that teleport around you and quickly maul you to death.
Part of me really wants to go back to this game. It's probably some of my favorite environmental storytelling I've ever encountered. But this game is brutal. I made it to a certain part where a certain enemy destroys me. If I could just load up and try again until I was able to figure out how to beat them it would be fine, but no. You can die 5 times and if you haven't completed the game by that point then you have to start. completely. over. And it's rough.
Even with all that I'm thinking heavily on going back. Something about this game speaks to me. I love the loneliness of it. The lore of it. The eeriness. I know lots of people don't like it, but I can't help but think this game is very close to something very special.
Has anyone else noticed this game? Looks quite fascinating; survival/base-building elements in a post-apocalyptic snowy wasteland.. but with the focus on what appears to be souls-style combat with really tough enemies. Maybe a bit like The Long Dark meets Dark Souls? It looks really cool, gameplay vids are quite impressive too. It's in early access and the Steam page has been spammed with negative reviews, giving it the "mixed" rating, but it seems that all of the complaints are about performance/framerate, not the actual content of the game itself. Possibly one to keep an eye on. :)
