A few years ago, my partner and I stumbled on a tiny gallery that had a wonderful show featuring works of Piet Mondrian alongside those of his contemporaries and their correspondence. It was an amazing way of illustrating the ideas behind and context of the art.
So I love the idea of a puzzle game based around those paintings. There are a few things that keep me from loving this execution, though:
- The commentary on the works feels a bit superficial to me, focusing on the ingredients (angles, colors, etc.) while only hinting at the intention behind them.
- Some elements meant to increase the difficulty, such as removing visible dividing lines, add a layer of guesswork to the puzzles that makes them feel less rewarding to solve.
- I find the puzzles in The Boogie Woogie and New York galleries a lot less interesting and fun than those in The Style gallery.
It's a beautiful game and I'm glad I gave it a whirl, and if you're unfamiliar with Mondrian's work this could be a very novel introduction. It just didn't quite scratch the itch I expected it to.
