Hidden Gem?
This review is for the Nintendo 64 version

A slightly obscure game that appears on a lot of hidden gems videos. I just don't really get the praise that this game gets. People applauds the combat of Hybrid Heaven. It does have potential because its a mixed of a wrestling/mixed martial art game and a turn based RPG but it gets extremely boring quickly.

Hybrid Heaven: Getting My Kicks
This review is for the Nintendo 64 version

Hybrid Heaven is a totally unique game on a platform where RPGs didn't come by too often. Combining tactical fighting/wrestling movement with RPG mechanics makes for a game that isn't too polished but very entertaining, along with a wacky yet well-told story.

Taking place as the president's bodyguard who may or may not be a clone hybrid (spoilers if we go into details), the player infiltrates a subterranean world underneath Washington DC to kick and punch clone/alien hybrids, mutants, robots, and all sorts of baddies in order to save the president and get back to his girlfriend by Christmas Day.

The fighting system consists of set locations where the player enters an enclosed arena where two fighters move around and attack. Footsies is the name of the game, with a lot of moving, running, backing up, and stepping aside while a meter goes up to apply any actions. These actions can be punches, kicks, items, grapples, or combos that can combine moves to unlock other attacks. Parts of the player's body can be hit in order to level them up, as well as hitting with them to level up as well. Special moves are also learned by getting thrown by …

Special moves are also learned by getting thrown by the enemy, creating an odd system where the player baits certain attacks to add to their arsenal. It's not a totally solid system, as a lot of battles will be patiently waiting for the combo meter to arise while running around and kicks (i.e. the Middle Kick) is almost always superior from start to finish. There are plenty of items available but the player will want to save those for later bosses.

The underground areas are a lot of corridors that, while rendered on the N64 with muddy detail, look cool and varied enough to move the player along (i.e. the reactor core, the clone center, exploding and bent bridges, etc). The music is also quite serviceable, with the battle themes somewhat memorable and the ambiance of the other tracks fitting enough. The enemies are the real star of the show, resembling all sorts of strange and weird sentai villains with their own unique heads and movements on a somewhat human frame.

The story seems absolutely insane, with aliens that come down to Earth in order to stop a traitor that has been installing clones in important parts of our society to slowly take over the "overground" above but the cutscenes are surprisingly good at their job, filled with twists and turns that make things very clear to the player while moving them along. This makes even the parts that drag compelling once the player manages to get through them.

Hybrid Heaven is a game definitely worth playing, if not for the wacky story and weird creatures then the unique battle system that begs another game developer to give its designs a fair shot in a future game.
