"Look! Grandma and grandpa are in love!"

-My kid excitedly sharing with their siblings about the goings-on of their Mii recreations of my in-laws.

I Used To (Living The) Dream For Times Like These

Part of me wants to say "I wish this had more content" but a bigger more rational part of me understands I probably wasn't meant to play it for 45 hours in the first week. Probably the best/worst game that could've coincided with getting laid off 🙃. Anyways if we can get an incredible Tomodachi Life sequel in 2026 on …

Probably the best/worst game that could've coincided with getting laid off 🙃. Anyways if we can get an incredible Tomodachi Life sequel in 2026 on Switch then anything (Picross 3D round 3) is possible, until then the whimsical goof fest yuri multiverse crackfic au generator gets a 5/5 from ME.

What Are We Doing?

And okay, it’s amusing to be flashbanged by a post with 95,000 likes of Benjamin Netanyahu crucified on the beach now and again. But nearly every post I see affirms that a lot of people are playing for the algorithm. Tomodachi Life’s online footprint has reduced the game to a single, immediately understandable joke: some famous or evil or strange person saying or doing something that feels scandalous in a Nintendo game.

This doesn’t move the needle for me. My island’s main cast are all from my real life, and I’ve delighted in giving everyone play-by-play reports of our avatars’ goings-on. My girlfriend’s Mii made a bad first impression on her IRL best friend, and now they’re seemingly destined to be chilly acquaintances for digital life. I’ve had two of my friends bond over their mutual love of, and skill at, worshipping me. And my friends who are playing too give me updates in return — apparently my Mii is bullying everyone on one of their islands.

Ask some corners of the internet though, and you’ll be told that I’m playing the game wrong. I stumbled across discourse incited by someone asking whether Tomodachi Life players have real friends — quote posting an island lineup of only anime and videogame characters in full makeup that hardly even resemble actual Miis.

That didn’t go over well. The breathless replies argued that to put your real friends into the game was to cross a social boundary, to subject them to the vulgar, wild sandbox of Living the Dream. Of course, I’m paraphrasing, since the actual replies were more along the lines of “I’m not putting my IRL friends into the yaoi simulator lmao.” To believe this is to assume Tomodachi Life must be a site of depravity, and that your loved ones are undoubtedly sucked into an irony-poisoned vortex of MadLibs provocation if they’re invited.

To this group, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is exactly that, because they view the game as a tract of land for farming viral content. They’ve decided it has to be crass and taboo — that’s what travels the furthest on social media. As is the case with any game contingent on user-generated content, the act of play is twisted by extrinsic incentives. Is it meaningful to put Charlie Kirk on your island, or is it just intoxicating to watch the likes roll in on your post about it?

This comes out today, but I only just checked out the demo last night.

I made my main character, and then of course I had to make her a Yautja (potential) boyfriend.

Honestly, I'm really proud of how I made the actual mouth. The mandibles, however, are basically impossible with the way some things can't be turned or flipped. I tried all kinds of eyebrow/facial hair/glasses/nose combinations. Ended up with eyebrows for the top set and sunglasses for the bottom. 😂You can't change nostril color, obviously, but I used those teardrop ones to kinda mimic the pincers.

There's a facepaint mode, so I was able to do the Blood marking on his forehead, and maybe I'll eventually go in handheld mode and try to draw on the mandibles, but I'm happy with it for now!

I've been playing Tomodachi Life lately and have been loving it. This direct showed that the game will be woke with a nonbinary option and dating preference options. The most important criticism of the original to address and they did it. We are so back.

Right now, my most anticipated game of the year.
