First Impression / How I Found the Game

I have always been a huge fan of the Backrooms concept. The idea of endless liminal spaces, strange entities, and environments that feel familiar but completely wrong has always fascinated me. I’m constantly searching for new Backrooms experiences, so naturally I came across Backrooms: Escape Together.

I played this game with a friend I regularly complete achievement-based games with. Together, we managed to unlock all achievements in under 10 hours, which I consider a pretty impressive achievement because the game requires you to complete the entire game without dying in Purgatory Mode. One mistake from either player means the entire run is over and everything has to be restarted.

After experiencing everything the game currently offers, I can confidently say that this might actually be one of the best Backrooms games I have played. In many ways, I even enjoyed it more than Escape the Backrooms, especially because of how well it captures the feeling of exploring an endless unknown environment.

Gameplay / Core Experience

The main objective is simple: escape the Backrooms.

However, getting there is much harder than it sounds. Throughout the game, you need to complete different tasks, solve puzzles, survive entities, and figure out how each level works.

The biggest strength of Backrooms: Escape Together is the procedural generation. Every death creates a new version of the environment. The objectives remain mostly the same, but the layout changes, meaning you cannot simply memorize one route and repeat it forever.

This gives the game much better replayability compared to many other Backrooms experiences.

The gameplay constantly changes depending on the level:

  • solving puzzles
  • escaping entities
  • exploring unknown areas
  • finding items
  • surviving dangerous situations

The game manages to combine multiple genres into one experience:

  • liminal exploration
  • horror
  • puzzle solving
  • co-op chaos
  • funny moments with friends

Playing with a friend definitely changes the experience, but there were still many moments where we separated to complete different objectives. Those moments created genuine tension because suddenly you are alone in these empty environments, not knowing what might appear.

Horror / Atmosphere

The biggest strength of Backrooms: Escape Together is the atmosphere.

The game understands that the Backrooms are not scary because of constant jumpscares. The fear comes from isolation, uncertainty, and the feeling that something could appear at any moment.

The entities themselves are not always terrifying because of their design. What makes them scary is their unpredictability. You can be walking around normally and suddenly something is chasing you.

The Purgatory Mode increases this tension massively. Knowing that one mistake from either player ends the entire run creates incredible pressure.

Thankfully, the game has a knockdown system. Most entities do not instantly kill you. Instead, you get knocked down and can recover using bandages, which also restore sanity.

This creates a good balance because mistakes are punishing, but not always immediately devastating.

Levels / My Experience

Level 4 – Office

My personal favorite level.

The office environment perfectly captures what I love about the Backrooms. The empty rooms, endless corridors, and quiet atmosphere create this strange feeling of familiarity and discomfort.

The level looks calm, but you always feel like something is wrong.

Gameplay-wise, it also creates some of the best moments when you are separated from your teammate and exploring alone.

Level Fun

This level was really fun because of the objective. Escaping the maze while dealing with the Partygoer was a great concept.

However, I have to give credit to Escape the Backrooms here. Their version of Level Fun was stronger in certain aspects, especially the music. The soundtrack created a much more memorable and unsettling atmosphere.

That being said, Backrooms: Escape Together still has its own charm. The Daisy AI song is honestly a great addition and fits perfectly with the strange and chaotic energy of the Backrooms.

Interestingly, this level was also the reason we failed our first Purgatory run. After understanding the mechanics, we completed it easily during our second attempt.

Level 232 – Infinite Supermarket

One of the newer levels and honestly one of the most interesting ones.

At first, this level was quite difficult because you have to collect items while dealing with the security entity hunting you.

However, once we understood the mechanics, it became much easier. During our successful Purgatory run, we completed this level on our first try.

The concept itself fits perfectly with the Backrooms: taking a familiar location and turning it into something unsettling.

Level 6 – Lights Out

The twist of this level is honestly much better than the version in Escape the Backrooms.

The scanning mechanic was confusing and frustrating at first, but once you understand how it works, the level becomes much more enjoyable.

It starts as one of the more frustrating sections but becomes surprisingly easy and satisfying once you understand the rules.

Level Run

This is one area where I still think Escape the Backrooms did something better.

The chase is intense and works well, but the overall execution could still be improved.

Luckily, the developers are actively working on the game, and improvements are planned for future updates.

Graphics / Presentation

Visually, Backrooms: Escape Together is beautiful.

The Unreal Engine presentation creates incredibly realistic environments, and the liminal spaces look exactly how they should.

The graphics are one of the biggest reasons the game succeeds. The environments feel believable, like abandoned places that somehow exist outside normal reality.

The developers have also planned visual improvements and updates, so the game has even more potential in the future.

Problems / Things That Could Improve

The biggest limitation right now is simply the amount of content.

After around 10 hours, we had completed everything currently available.

However, I do not see this as a major problem because the developers clearly have plans for the future. There is already a roadmap with planned updates, new levels, improvements, and additional features.

The foundation is already extremely strong.

A constantly expanding Backrooms experience with more environments, entities, and mechanics could become something truly special.

We also experienced very few bugs. The only major issue happened near the end when we tried accessing a secret area after completing Purgatory Mode.

My friend somehow glitched through the floor, and we had to redo a small section involving finding the bolt cutters in Level 3 before returning to the hub.

Luckily, it was not a huge problem, and after completing the game you can access the hub directly in normal mode.

Replayability / Future Potential

The procedural generation system gives Backrooms: Escape Together a huge advantage.

Many Backrooms games lose their replay value once you know the solution. Here, every run can feel slightly different because the environments are generated differently.

I would love to see this become a constantly updated Backrooms experience where new levels, entities, and mechanics are added over time.

The developers already have a roadmap, and I genuinely hope they continue supporting this game.

The potential is massive.

Backrooms: Escape Together is one of the strongest Backrooms experiences I have played.

It combines everything I want from the concept:

  • creepy liminal environments
  • interesting puzzles
  • unique levels
  • co-op moments
  • unpredictable situations

The game is not perfect. It is still relatively short, and some areas could use more polish.

But the quality of the content that already exists is extremely impressive.

After completing every achievement with my friend in around 9.8 hours, including the challenging Purgatory run, I can say that we had an amazing experience.

We will definitely return when new updates release.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

For Backrooms fans, horror fans, and players looking for a unique co-op experience, this game is absolutely worth trying.
