I decided to play this for a couple days as a break after seeing a Jim Sterling video about it. Bonus for being free. With those graphics I am not playing it on my gaming computer rather on my low end multimedia PC. Started a normal single player game in Germany. Killed a couple of zombies with barehands and then found a hammer. Went after a flaming zombie which exploded in my face and took over half my health, then got killed by a chameleon flanker because I had not optimized my sensitivity and graphic settings (ultra was too high!) and could not keep up with it. I was not liking the game at this point; died a few more times, was not able to start at the same location and could not see a map. Tried easy and it started me off with low hp for some reason, which I found more difficult.
Then I started fiddling with the advanced settings. Slow zombie movement? Yes. The main reason I keep dying is because the zombies clip into me and then do constant unavoidable damage. The whole point of zombies is they move slower than you so why the hell would they be able to move fast? No skill and equipment loss upon death? Sign me up. Cheats? Hell yes I want to teleport back to where I died.
So then I was able to survive long enough to get something done in Berlin. I set up my base inside a doctor's office and there was a conveniently fenced off patch of grass behind it for farming. I died of immunity loss from having to drink dirty water. I do not enjoy babysitting meters and found things to deplete far too quickly in this game, so again to the advanced settings. I wanted to turn off how immunity decreases on its own when it goes below 50 but did not see an option. Then decided to go on a sewer exploring expedition and ended up in the center of the city. Did not find anything interesting and was lucky to get out alive because of all the zombies. Got in a fire truck and drove out on the freeway. Ran out of gas in the middle of the freeway and had to walk the rest of the way, but to make up for that I seen a crate with a parachute in the distance. It had a bunch of military grade weapons and ammo; sweet.
Then I started playing around with the settings more. I wanted to disable item respawns so I would be forced to scavenge the entire map and vastly increase the number of zombies so that I would have to horde supplies. Disabling item respawn does not work though because it respawns when you log in and log back in and seems to also go on distance. Max zombie spawn works though and I had to relocate my base to behind the doctors office because zombies spawn in there and wrecked my stuff. So I built a small cabin in the alley; it is a very nice secure area except that time when a zombie clipped through the wall of the fire station.
Now having a handle on how to play the game I wanted to start over in PEI (still with the huge zombie spawn). So I started near a small town and got a bunch of gear; a hockey stick and later a fire axe and sport rifle (died once and had to teleport back). Pretty harrowing having to stealth around with the huge amount of zombies. Then I went to the nearby military base and stuck around assassinating the entire base. Got military armor and an assault rifle. Then was one big guy so I devised a plan to kill him. I drove a busted up jeep within shooting distance, jumped on top and started with the head shots. It did not work! It through a giant rock at me and wrecked the jeep and I had to run. Only had 30 bullets and had to hide up a tower to switch to the sport rifle, which only had 10 bullets. That did not kill him either and I ended up doing a bunch of suicide knife runs until respawns smashed my bedroll and then everything respawned. That did not go according to plan at all; even a juggernaught on State of Decay is not that hard.
Stopped playing after that. It is an ok game for being free but not that engaging and too much of the game mechanics are for multiplayer, which I am not inclined to play.
