PULSAR: Lost Colony Review

Pulsar is a game about flying big spaceships around the galaxy, exploring and gathering money, before inevitably blowing up and repeating the whole cycle. While this sounds incredibly repetitive, it is anything but that. Every time I play through it, I find something new to explore. It's these discoveries, and the great fun it is to play with friends, that can make you lose yourself in the game for hours at a time.

Gameplay: The game starts with the captain picking one of 5 ships. A crew of 5 will then take roles such as an engineer, pilot, gunner, and so on. Each of these role fit together very well, making no role seem useless or boring. The captain of the ship then decides the course, and the journey begins. There are planets, stations, caves and asteroids to explore along the way. in empty space, the players can engage in tense, ship to ship battles which involve computer viruses, turrets, boarding, and dodging. These battles require the crew to work very well with each other.

Eventually, a group called the infected will attack the galaxy. These ships are extremely challenging, and provide a good end goal (destroying them). There are …

There are also ships called sector commanders, who are essentially the game's bosses. The players will have to build up a great ship from hundreds of components to take these on.

Graphics: The art style is beautiful, and makes exploring planets even more amazing. However, the character models are very bad. This, however, did not detract from my experience playing the game.

UI: With the new update, the interface is smooth, and doesn't feel clunky or annoying to use.

Content: At the moment, the game has a fair amount of places and types of ships, put the devs are constantly working on adding to it. They are very committed to this, and each update has me rushing back to the game to see what new things there are to do.

AI: The AI sucks. there is no other way to put it. Luckily, that is fixable, and it only sometimes takes away form the game.

Bugs: Most bugs are squashed in the frequent updates, but once in a while I will hit a very annoying bug which I am forced to work with until the next update.

All in all, I would strongly recommend Pulsar for anyone who wants a great co-op experience that will make them feel like they are in Star Trek.
