The game was ported to the SG-1000 in 1986 exclusively for Japan, with an MSX port following shortly afterwards. It was also brought to the Sega Master System as The Ninja, however The Ninja makes several adjustments to the story and characters, as well as updating the gameplay. Interesting. I will have to play this some more tomorrow before I'm sure. I wish you could shoot in a direction other than forward... that would make this game a lot more enjoyable. And the way they bumrush you at the end of levels is tacky (tho cool how there's a sort of boss feature). That being said, the world map is so amazing. I love the colors of it all. The music is mostly nice. And the way different terrain affects you is great. I just wish the gameplay was a bit better, especially considering it's an 85 arcade game so it should be more than capable for more. Hm, it's worth trying some more. I'm on the 3rd "level," we will see what I think tomorrow!

Sega decided to focus on the ninja side in this instance. This is an overhead run-and-gun (releasing a little before Commando, even), in which you shoot tons of enemy ninjas with throwing knives (she's got a few hundred of them hidden away somewhere). And that's all the game is -- very simple, but extremely tough. (And watching videos on Youtube, the enemy ninjas only get more clever in how they ambush you from every possible location, as levels progress.) No matter how many times I try though, I have a very hard time getting far in this one, so IDK if I'll ever actually get to the end. But it's decent fun while it lasts, and has a bright and colorful look to it all that's fun. It would also pave the way for better follow-ups like Kiki Kaikai (via Taito), which would bring us the Pocky and Rocky series.
