B-Tier Vampire Survivors/Nation Red mix

  • Playtime: 106 minutes

This game is basically Vampire Survivors that's worse in every way, except you can (choose to) aim yourself like in Nation Red. But yeah, only three small maps, fewer characters, fewer abilities, fewer everything compared to VS really. It also has a rather restrictive meta-upgrade system that requires a ton of grinding, in addition to having to unlock characters and weapons beyond the starting ones. It's not a bad game and i had some fun in a couple of runs, but it quickly gets repetitive.

The narrative elements are minimal, the presentation doesn’t impress but makes the combat easy to read, but the core gameplay loop is very satisfying. The variety of heroines also gives players a range of play styles, which get further boosted when mixing and matching level upgrades in new ways. The core gameplay loop is familiar and the game doesn’t innovate in big ways. I enjoyed the game most in short sessions, playing two or three runs at a time, enough to unlock new options and see what strategies I can build around them. 20 Minutes Till Dawn is satisfying for fans of the genre but I hope its creators take more risks with a potential sequel.

Game #38/200 As an enjoyer of roguelikes, I knew it was only a matter of time before I would play a game in the "arena" subgenre after the success of Vampire Survivors. Initially, upon seeing VS, I was unimpressed by the seemingly braindead gameplay and ugly visuals. By now, the genre is decently saturated, so I have been able to look around and choose 20 Minutes Till Dawn, whose aesthetic is quite cool and gameplay seems a little deeper than some other titles I observed. Like most roguelikes, 20MTD borrows quite a lot from Isaac, even if it is a far removed cousin. The main mechanic that it uses from Isaac, (other than the formulaic "play many short runs with some random generation to gain incremental permanent progress") is the synergy-building item selection. Like Isaac, you will need to carefully select the items you are presented with to create a powerful character whose benefits work with one another. I found 20MTD really successful in this regard. Runs are fairly long at 20 minutes, and there is a lot of opportunity to get swarmed and die. I rarely found that choosing "damage up" or "fire rate up" items to be an easy path to victory, as it is in Isaac sometimes. Instead, you really have to carefully consider the strengths of your character/weapon selection and decide which type of run you want to build. Even some builds that seemed innately powerful to me (namely, summons) were not automatic wins. You often need to play skillfully and consider your needs. I did have an absolutely insane lightning-based run that seemed a bit cheap, but it was only one occasion. 20MTD is an addicting game to pick up and play, and win or lose, I often wanted to go into it again. Yet I do think the game suffers a bit from its over-simplicity. After 7-8 hours or so, you've seen pretty much every power up or other mechanic that is in the game. The "one more run" impulse dies down quite a bit and it's easy to put the game down after you've won a number of times (keep in mind this game is about the price of a 7/11 coffee).

Unlike Isaac or Gungeon, which require quite a bit of mechanical skill, success in this title is almost entirely dependent on decision making. You will have to do a bit of dodging, careful reloading, aiming, etc., but it's really not too demanding if your build is good. I also think the dark and drab visuals, while cool, can be a bit exhausting after many runs. Not only that, but there are only 3 maps with just a bit of variety among them. I wonder if this subgenre is just a bit too boxed in by its inherently limited scope, where there is not much that can be done to expand on the in-game worlds. Yes, you can add more guns, power ups, characters, enemy types, etc., but you're stuck with a very small number of sandboxes to play in. I'll have to try Vampire Survivors and Brotato and see how I feel from there.

I think it's among the most satisfying of the Vampire Survivor wave of arena survival games, with a twin stick shooter spin to make it a bit more engaging. Fun characters, weapons, powerups, etc. You can get some synergies going that feel great. Balance has improved since launch, so there's substantially more options for viable builds, though runs can still get a bit same-y.

Still, I had fun for 25 hours and that's more than good enough for me.

I think this is a really nice snackable twin stick shooter/vampire survivors. There's a few too many upgrades that just seem like they are always useless, and others that are always good, and it does lead to too many runs feeling the exact same. However, considering I put 20 hours into it without getting too over it, I think that's …

There's a few too many upgrades that just seem like they are always useless, and others that are always good, and it does lead to too many runs feeling the exact same. However, considering I put 20 hours into it without getting too over it, I think that's entirely fair! I finished this with all the achievements and when I thought it was too easy, they added a few maps that kicked my ass over and over again so totally fair enough there. I definitely like this more than vampire survivors just because it's Actually Fun To Play.

A more 'shooty', Hyperlight-style VS clone

I will now try out and review all new bulletheaven / autoshooter / a-rpg roguelites for you as I really like this genre and also procrastinate hard on my dissertation lol.

I will now try out and review all new bulletheaven / autoshooter / a-rpg roguelites for you as I really like this genre and also procrastinate hard on my dissertation lol.

Aesthetically, of alle these VS copy cats, this looks the most like your classical indie game. Grey-pink coulour palette, low pixel-old school graphic and a one person development team.

Unlike other bulletheaven, this one does not autoshoot (I refuse this name as genre classification anyway as it does not grasp the genuine aspect of its gameplay). So you need two hands that is, sorry coffee cup.

You do shoot more in the sense of the word, and you can also aim, which makes 2mtd stand out a little. Combined with its graphic it feels it little like Hyper Light Drifter on steroids maybe.

There is no run external progression except buying characters and weapons, which are all equally good. Just Abby maybe is better, and once you found that out the game is kind of broke because she's imba.

I just beat it with Abby and I fear that it's way easier with her than with anybody else. The variety of upgrades and playstyles is there but definitely not as high as in VS so far. But maybe that will change overtime.

All in all an aesthetically pleasing and satisfying bulletheaven that is fun for at least 5-10 hours and worth its money.

20 Minutes Till Dawn i think is a decently fun arcade game.

The first hours are certainly fun when you learn about everything and it is nice to come back for a round every now and then.

For my fellow roguelite enjoyers, I hesitate to call it a roguelite we could possibly argue about this, but in my opinion the roguelite genre has been heavily watered down, and this is one of them. The roguelite elements are there, but at the bare minimum. So make what you will of it my fellows.

As for the rest of the game, it is a lot of fun for the first, 20 or so hours, based on my experience. Problem for me is that when i learned about all the powerups and the patterns, it became pretty easy to get a decent build and reach the end.

No matter which build you do, if you get past 15minutes, all builds basically look the same on the screen.

I did 3 runs of the endless mode after the second i realised the power of a certain build and tried it. Played for 6 hours without any real problems, i got very bored though as leveling up came so far apart. Played these 6 hours over 4 days before i had to restart my PC and the run had to be forfeit.

So my TLDR is:

  • I wouldn't call this a roguelite
  • It is fun in bursts, and only the 20 and 10 minute modes
  • It's pretty easy to get a build you want as long as you don't accidentally walk into an enemy
  • In the end i'd say it is worth the money if you like something more arcady with lighter bullet hell and twinstick vibes.
