Gameplay didn't feel very tight or satisfying when stealthing about & defeating enemies. All my failures felt unfair, as it was mainly due to the bad controls imo, this is very apparent when it comes to sticking or going up/down walls, as most times I'd find myself trying to something, but the complete opposite happens & I end up failing …

All my failures felt unfair, as it was mainly due to the bad controls imo, this is very apparent when it comes to sticking or going up/down walls, as most times I'd find myself trying to something, but the complete opposite happens & I end up failing because of it if you catch my drift.

At first blush I hated this game. I find it SO difficult and entirely unforgiving. Procedural generation means some levels are literally impossible. But once I worked past my perfectionist tendencies, I actually came to enjoy it.

The story/narrative is almost nonexistent, but the music and general steampunk aesthetic are very fun. The variety and combination of challenges make it never get uninteresting. There's very little hand-holding or tutorials from the game, so there's a lot of learning through failure, which is fun if you work past your aforementioned perfectionism and expectations (I found it very frustrating at first).

Often the only way to figure out a new challenge (such as a new enemy or obstacle type) is to die on it once or twice. In this way the game is kind of Dark Souls-ish. If you're like me you'll also find that you didn't spend your money wisely on your first playthrough because, well, you only learn what you need by experience and the game doesn't tell you how to play.

Play it like a roguelike with a friend!

This game has its downsides when playing alone, but I took turns playing it with my brother. One of us plays, the other watches and comments, swap on death.
We had a good laugh at ridiculous deaths, some bugs and shared our frustrations.

Each heist we swapped seats, so after a frustrating death you could wind down without tilting. We also voted which upgrades to buy first.
Last level has an annoying mechanic if you die, we countered it with timely save scum (alt+f4).
Completed this game together once in 2017, then once more in 2018, might do it again.
Would rate 4\5 if I played it alone.
I love that ticking sound in the soundtrack and how the music changes if you trigger an alert.
