Romancing SaGa is set in the fictional world of Mardias, which was created by the God Marda. Long ago, war raged between three wicked gods, Death, Saruin, and Schirach, and the lord of all gods, Elore. At the end of that long conflict, Death and Schirach were stripped of their powers, and Saruin was imprisoned through the might of the ten Fatestones and the hero Mirsa's ultimate sacrifice. A millennium had passed, and the Fatestones were scattered throughout Mardias. All this time the powers of evil festered, bent on releasing Saruin from his prison.

Romancing SaGa 3 is a favorite among fans of the series, and generally one of the better received titles by non-fans. Naturally, it is my least favorite entry in the series that I've played... so far. I still haven't gotten around to Unlimited SaGa.

On the positive, side, the pixel art is right up there with the the best of the SNES, like FF6 and Chrono Trigger. I'd put the music a step behind those games, but it's still quite good. Character and monster designs are top notch. It really has a strong classic vibe going for it. It's more straightforward mechanically than many of the other SaGa games, as well. It's a pioneer in open world game design, and offered a level of freedom you really wouldn't see elsewhere at the time. RS3 controls far better than RS2, and dodging fights you don't want to take is more enjoyable than frustrating now.

That's mostly where my praise ends, though. If I had to put it succinctly, Romancing SaGa 3 is hollow.

Someone scooped all of the narrative, dialogue, and direction right out of the game. You get a little bit of story at the beginning and a little bit at the end. There's a bad thing that happens every 300 years and chosen ones. You gotta close the abyssal gates to deal with the bad thing and chosen one stuff. That's it. That's basically the whole story. When you get out into the open world, there is essentially no direction and very few bread crumbs for where quests may be hiding. If you don't use a guide, you're liable to spend hours talking to townspeople, hoping that something will happen. Strangely enough, there are pubs with bar keepers you can ask about rumors in most towns, but they only have non-default dialogue for a couple of quests. That would have been a great place for the remaster to add more hints, at the least. Anyway, when you do find a side quest, they feel half baked as well. For example, a village mayor left me for dead when I tried to help him, but when I got out, there was absolutely no reactivity to it. He wasn't sorry or afraid of me, he just went back to his default dialogue. There were a few small scenarios that I enjoyed, though. In particular, one has a masked hero (and a lookalike) protecting townspeople from shady corporate thugs. It was goofy and over the top in a charming way, even if it only lasted a few minutes. There's also a crab man that wants to see the world

The game mechanics feel similarly underdone. There are no species with unique progression systems like the original SaGa trilogy, and no kingdom to manage like Romancing SaGa 2. There is a decent roster of side characters to recruit, but progression is limited to leveling up weapon and magic skills, HP and MP, and sparking techs. Unlike RS2, there are only a few magic spells that utility comparable to just using a weapon tech, buffs wear off fairly quickly, and far more enemies are just outright immune to debuffs. As such, combat largely regressed to the JRPG trope of spamming your most powerful moves and healing as needed.

I say largely, because there was definitely some strategy to be found in choosing the right formation and equipment for a boss encounter. Now, this generally requires you to fight a boss and lose first, rather than be able to dynamically react to the situation, but I do appreciate that I can't just waltz into a boss fight and win every time. That said, bosses have fairly large movesets and seem to pick their attacks at random. They typically have one or two attacks that can really ruin your day via high full party damage or status effects. I think there's literally 3 consumable AoE healing items in the game, but otherwise, all healing and status cure is single target. This means that a bad pattern where the boss spams their dangerous AoEs can just be unwinnable, making victory in a hard fight sometimes feel more like luck than skill or preparation.

Anyway, despite my complaints, I didn't think the game was outright terrible and I did manage to finish it. I can see the sparks of greatness that others love in the game, but they just weren't enough for me. I suppose I can't expect every entry in a long running, highly experimental series to be a hit for me. Oh well, on to the next SaGa!

After a stupid amount of grinding, I finally did it. That’s the hardest last boss I’ve fought in years.

Some quick thoughts:

  • RS3 is a bit harder than SaGa Frontier, easier than RS2, save for the end game.
  • The game world and plot feels way less developed than its predecessor. There's no character development, a few loose ends that don't get tied up, and the story is mostly slammed into the last few moments of the game. I know RS2 didn't have much, but the "prologue" with Gerard, the inheritence magic stuff, and the 7 Heroes storyline felt much more developed and was at least coherent, especially compared to... whatever is going on in 3.
  • The point of no return is mercilessly too early, and as was the case with me, one can waste hours of gameplay before realizing you're screwed. For no good reason, at the time you need your storage the most, it's not there.
  • What is with these games and the super limited inventory? Did anyone ever complain about having too much inventory space in Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6?
  • I don't think the music in this one was as good as other RS or the …

  • I will admit, the ending when you lose in the last battle is a nice touch. The first time.

My set up for those interested:

My final team was Julien (MC) with swords, Monica with short swords, Ellen axes and martial arts, Thomas spears, and Khalid big swords. After getting my ass handed to me and going back to an earlier save, I redid everyone’s magic, giving them all the moon heal, Shadow Servant, and Revive, except Monica. She had the most MP so she got water stuff for Quicktime, and Parhelion for some extra insurance. Spent the last few days with the X button literally taped down, running into fights to build more magic/weapon levels and hp/sp/mp.

Next stop was finishing all the equipment at the workshop. One of my biggest problems in the last fight was charm, for which there is apparently no ward. So two meteorite shards went to Kris Knives for status ails defense boosts. It was a PITA farming the rare drops, mostly for armor that wasn’t worth it. The Dragon Scale Armor came in handy. Knowing what I know now about the Triones (Sevens) Sword, I should have taken another set of the armor instead of the Dragon Scale Sword.

So everyone was geared as well as possible for MDef, status resistance (particularly confusion and charm, so CHA boosts where I could), and lightning and fire resist.

Finally, tried to spark more techs with my team, also an enormous pain. Ellen was my main DPS with axe, but I switched her to martial arts for Tiger Break, and she did really well catching up with everyone else there. She easily did 3k more damage than anyone else on any given turn.

Most people ended with around 950 HP, 40 MP, 150 SP, level 40 weapon, and level 20 primary magic.

I somehow didn’t get charmed once in the last fight, but keeping up with healing was still tough. Giving everyone levels in moon and sun magic paid off, I was able to skip phase 2 (the first eclipse) of the fight on the first turn. Monica’s speed plus Staves of Vivacity was a lifesaver. The last phase’s knocking Shadow Servant off of people (if they survived the attack) was almost the last straw, but somehow I pushed through.

Never again. Those other 7 endings can wait for me on YouTube, if I even decide I care someday.

I was too annoyed with the final boss to go to bed so I beat the game instead. Now I'm gonna be tired and grumpy tomorrow at work, but if my coworkers say anything I'll just tell them that I beat the Destroyer with an underdeveloped team so they better watch it.

I've had a cold the last few days and put a ton of hours into Romancing SaGa 3 since I wasn't up for much else. It has all of the SaGa vagueness in terms of quest direction and game mechanics, but doesn't have the x-factor that other SaGa games have for me. The art style and music are very nice, and it has the 16-bit JRPG classic charm, but I need some weirder progression mechanics or a kingdom to develop or an excellent/unique combat system or just anything else. I'll finish it, but I doubt it'll stick with me like the other games in the series.

I really hate grinding and was getting my ass handed to me midway through, in typical SaGa fashion. So I learned about better ways to spark techs, and did a TON of grinding. Easily plowed though the rest of the game.

Never have I felt so over prepared and then been so thoroughly routed by a last boss. Yikes.

Is it me or did Romancing Saga 3 get the standard terrible Square Enix port treatment?

I imagine that they have made choices to update things like dialogue boxes in an effort to increase readibility, but is there not a way to do this that is also aesthetically pleasing? Who thought the following looked good, or even fits the aesthetic of the game?
