A very flawed game with a lot of charm
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

The biggest problem of Projection, at least for me, is that the core gameplay is just not working reliably well. In this game you control a girl that can only do a short jump, but early in the game you gain control of a small light (on a gamepad controlled by the right stick, while the girl is controlled with the left one). With this light it's possible to cast shadows that create platforms for to reach unaccessible areas and hidden collectibles in form of butterflies.

Puzzle? Platforming

Unfortunately it's very glitchy and you constantly have to readjust the light while you and the shadows clip through everything. I never encountered a gamebreaking situation and the game has really forgiving checkpoints, but it's still very annoying to slip and fall just because the light moved a tiny bit in another direction. The quality of the levels felt very uneven as well.

The game has a really great and unique shadow puppet look with detailed backgrounds and a very nice soundtrack, I just wish the gameplay would reach a similar quality. The story is actually very nice: the protagonist runs away from home to avoid responsiblity for her mistakes and ends up …

The story is actually very nice: the protagonist runs away from home to avoid responsiblity for her mistakes and ends up travelling the world after finding a mysterious shadow theatre. The people she meets help her to re-evaluate her life by showing her positive and negative character traits that mirror her own. I just hope enough people have the patience to see the very nice ending sequence.

I received the game for free and I wouldn't recommend buying the game for the full price, but if you can get it cheap or already have it in your library you should give it a chance. You might have a good time or at least see a few nice shadow puppets....

The Monkey King is a bad role model
