Beat during free trial over 2 play sessions. The game was a metroidvania but was light on optional power ups and I did not see anything to backtrack for upon getting a new character. I looted everything I could and had more healing items and money than I needed. The cooking pots could be used like a bank for storage, though only for ingredients. I found cooking to be more for helping with inventory management, though there were otherwise useless ingredients that could be combined with healing items to improve them. The best recipes I found were the rare flower + 2 useless to make an auto heal, and 3 dragon fruit for a complete heal. That auto heal was very important because it could be difficult to manage the 3 characters at once, especially during boss fights. The game could have used a pause to better control the characters. I either stacked the characters together to control as 1, or only used 1 character at a time. Even though more elaborate set ups could be used, I found it too difficult to manage.

I controlled the older brother during the late game because he moved the fastest and was the best fighter. He could not swim though and most of my deaths were from repeatedly failing to use his grappling hook to get across water. Even though I had auto grappling turned on, it was still very awkward to control. I did not like how it only shot after releasing the button, which fooled me up all the time. A couple seconds of slow motion would have helped. His block was needed to get past hazards but I did not use it in combat beyond the first couple enemies after getting him. Being aggressive was far more effective though maybe it would be slightly useful for the final boss. Before I got him I mostly controlled Greak himself. He was fairly balanced between platforming and combat. I found his dodge, double jump and combat moves to be good enough to not need to resort to the crossbow. I used all my bolts shooting the maul boss from up high where he could not reach me, and did not find any need for them afterwards. I kept using him to dive under water thinking he was better at it than the girl, and wondering what I was missing after he kept dying. There were a few dives I brute forced through using healing items but eventually I tried out the girl and discovered she was the best swimmer. I preferred to take her off alone because of her ranged attack, which easily killed a lot of enemies from safe spots. Her levitation got more height and distance than the boys but both her platforming and attacking used the same mana bar so she struggled at having to use both at the same time, like against those annoying archer enemies. Otherwise I kept her AI controlled to auto shoot at enemies. For the second boss she just stood in a corner and shot only a few times; probably would have been better to stack up but at that point I was still getting used to the controls. The second last boss was tough with his melee ability that encased characters in goo. I failed a few times before soloing as the girl. She had to kite him around and kill adds, which was a real struggle with her limited mana, and required planning ahead to account for that recharge time. She did about 80% damage to the boss before getting caught, and I finished him off with Raydel. The final area was annoying with teleporters to swap the characters around. It would have been less daunting if there was a proper Super Metroid style map for each area. Then the final boss took a few tries as I learned the patterns and that each character's health was shown in the bottom left. I kept them stacked up and had to switch around to use healing as necessary; the reason I kept losing was because a character that I was not controlling died. There was an option to disable damage to the other characters but that was unrealistic and more like an Easy mode. I didn't even realize which part of the UI was hp until over an hour or 2 into the game, especially given the delay on healing after eating. I do not recall if potions were instant.

The animated movies and overall art style were very well done, and cute. I found the world building interesting and would like to see more; a sequel to find out what happens to the characters, and something to see what their old nation was like. It could have used more voice acting. The gameplay was well designed with creative puzzles and combat, other than the grappling hook. Frequent save points and respawning enemies and fruit meant that it was always possible to farm supplies. This was a solid fun game with only a few flaws.

7.5/10
