Few game are so frustratingly disappointing as The Uncertain. The setting really intrigued me and it had so much potential. A future in which humans become extinct and their robots took over to rebuild a civilisation from the ashes? Wow, how would a society made up of robots, each one with specific functions --and therefore limitations-- look like?
According to the game, it would be pretty much the same as human society. Robots communicate via speech, they sleep charge at night, they have cars, a police force and a regular economy based on work and trade. The moment the robot main character was forced to apologise to some construction-bot for not delivering a plasma cutter in time I realised that this game had no imagination. Why would he do that? Why would he speak with him in audio instead of just issuing commands and interchanging variables? Why would robots have petty arguments?
The lack of coherence was not helped by the atrocious gameplay. Roughly the first hour is filled with meaningless tedious busywork. Put batteries on a radio, calibrate the plasma cutter, with every action represented by a different annoying minigame with no difficulty.
Bucket list game, check! The Uncertain is an adventure game set in a distant future telling of humans gone extinct and robots are the single civilization remaining. You are one of those robots, who gets dragged into a conspiracy that concerns the fate of humans and the truth behind the current developments. The premise is fairly unique because you get to step into a sentient robot's shoes and contemplate about the way we humans behave and go about our lives.
This episode took me about 3 hours to complete and the puzzles are quite easy to figure out. There are also situations you find yourself in where you have to move carefully to not get shot down. Despite the easy challenges, my minor complaint is that walking from point-to-point-and-back can get tedious and break the flow if going for too long. The car-chase scene tries to bring variation to the gameplay but getting the maneuvering right gets slightly clunky. While I'm on that, what's the deal with having a camera viewing backwards on your pursuer but you can't have an extra camera viewing what's coming up ahead of you?
The game overall is still good enough to give a run, …

The game overall is still good enough to give a run, if you're looking for a story-focused, sci-fi adventure game with a unique plot to freshen up the experience. I would be curious to check out the sequel but I think I'll wait for a reasonable discount since the reviews are more on the mixed side of things.
Personal fact: I played through this game with Russian dialogues to get some practice in.
A decent game, bit rough around the edges, but only the first chapter of an intresting story.
Has potential for more.
If you haven't noticed already, this game is being given out for free on Steam until this day.
