i replayed this sort of recently (wii u) and my opinion really hasn't changed much since 2014 (actually 2015 i got it late). this has a very bog standard structure for a platformer with its six neatly packed worlds with 4-8 perfectly linear levels in each as well as a boss and a couple of secret exits per world. but …

Unlocked hard mode and playing with diddy and dixie definitely feels more classical donkey kong-ey, so it is likely than some of my issues with the feeling of this game was more because of having to play with donley than with the game itself. I think maybe this is going to be too hard for me to finish. I felt like the second boss was just so hard and it took me maybe 10 or 12 tries, even stacking myself with power ups. I just suck at dexterity stuff... That's why I'm more of an adventure/RPG gamer. Though I do really like the game …

Is there a reason not to pick Dixie when possible? The "You're playing inefficiently" achievement?

I just love that they put back some mine cart levels.

Someone in design decided that they had to change how DK runs. Now you have to keep pressing Y to run for a long while. I just can't.

Busted Bayou is by far the prettiest DK stage I have ever seen.

Been playing this again because of DKD and @BMO playing it. So people know it isn't nostalgia just speaking, I still think this game is one of the best. Donkey Kong was riding Rambi while that pig guy was running checkpoints and David Wise was going bonko mode. What a great game.

Sweet god, the hype is real folks. Now I understand why Mark Brown titled his GMTK video on DK: Tropical Freeze "Mario's Level Design, Evolved" and described it as "platforming design at its best." U was half this good. Beautiful pixel precise platforming, tight character control, deeply reliable movement and a game that's, so far, a joy to play. Even swimming is pleasurable. I know the DK fandom loves the entire series, but now I know why some call this the best one. It's, without a doubt, the tightest, most satisfying DK game that I've played and up there with the best of Nintendo's other platformers. And even though we all know I believe that bar to be a low one to clear for DK games based on my opinion of the classic games, I really have to emphasize that this isn't just a small step up in my opinion of a DK game, this is a giant leap. This is an absolute banger of a platformer, at least from what I've played so far.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a work of art. It is the KING of context. The environments give so much context to the mechanics of the game and while it's still a video game first, the world isn't to the platforming's detriment as it still varies so much per level. Also, it's very pretty and well animated.

I had never played a DK until this one and I bought it because a friend recommended it. I've enjoyed, but I didn't know how hard it was. Nevertheless , I enjoyed more Rayman Legends and Ori & the Blind Forest. I think I was expecting more of this franchise. Didn't enjoyed the bosses either, especially the last one.

Weellll done donkey Kong platformer. What else needs to be said. You know who you are if you liked it. If you didn't, the you need to do some soul searching.
