i'm probably so biased bc of nostalgia but DUDE. literally the best game in the franchise and i will gladly die on that hill. nothing will top the queen.
another layton game that will never fail to make me cry. the puzzles are fun and the story is so entertaining. yeah the tea minigame is an absolute pain but it's so charming and fun to collect the ingredients and make tea for people :')
also the folsense music will always get me!!!!

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is far better than Curious Village in every way in my opinion. I was hooked from the first game, so my excitement for Diabolical Box was immeasurable. And I have to say, it exceeded my expectations.
Diabolical Box takes place right after the events of Professor Layton and the Curious Village. After hearing of a mystical and cursed box, Professor Hershel Layton and his assistant, Luke, set out on the Molentary Express to find this box. The story (In my opinion) is so much better than Curious Village in almost every way. The characters are once again, incredible.
The art style is really great and I love the music even more in this one. There are 138 puzzles in the main game, with 15 bonus puzzles. Making a total of 153 puzzles. Once again, I did all of them almost by accident just due to how addicting the puzzles were and how great the story is. The puzzle system isn't much different from the first but I'd say the Picarat score is more balanced this time
The variety of the puzzles are great too and I did enjoy playing most of them. Except …

The variety of the puzzles are great too and I did enjoy playing most of them. Except maybe the sliding puzzles because I have no patience. I did find the puzzles a bit more repetitive this time around which I hope is fixed in Unwound Future
I can't express how much I recommend this game. Incredible story, incredible ending, incredible puzzles, incredible music, incredible presentation.
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is a must-play. Play Curious Village first. To avoid confusion. Great Game!

I loved the first game so I was very excited to try the sequel. The original game was really genius in terms of feel and surprising story in the end. The sequel does many similar positive things. But since the game is mostly a set of puzzles I am not sure whether they were that better in this installment compared to the original. Sequentially giving you the same puzzle but just different problem is a bit cheap trick that this game does. Compared to the original, this game adds some more mini games to the professor's trunk. But with the exception of camera mini game, I didn't care much for others. Tee brewing minigame was intriguing but I hate it so much as I could never brew anything new or correct tea that people requested. Places you visit are also bigger compared to the original. But I don't think I liked that. Foolsense is a town in which you will spend what feels like half of the game. And at the end I was a bit sick of that place. Navigating through it's vast map was annoying with constant back and fourths which made me accidentally skip a lot of puzzles that townspeople offered on random corners of the town. Luckily you can play those missed puzzles in witch's hut, but they don't feel as satisfying compared to having a random conversational context that you get when a townsperson challenges you with a puzzle. Probably the biggest let down for me was story. The game really engages you in story, so it disappoints you that more when it doesn't deliver on the end. The biggest miss in the story is introducing certain character
10/10 Peut-être mon Layton préféré... on y pleure, c'est épique, le voyage en train est exceptionnel... quel chef d'oeuvre
It's the sequel to Professor Layton and the Curious Village. The plot and storyline seems much more of a mystery than the first game, and it was less predictable.
The mini-games seem more interactive than the previous installment. I was quite pleased to see there was something to do after completing them (not just through extra puzzles at the bonus section).
The puzzles are better than the previous installment.
The music was fitting to any situation within the story, and the music for the puzzles have been changed, fortunately.
1 Sentence Review: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
Doesn't fully replicate the uniqueness and story of the original, but another fantastic assortment of puzzles and some slight Quality of Life improvements over the first.
1001 Games - #804
Pros: more puzzles & minigames, better plot than Curious Village (personal preference)
Cons: still little synergy between plot and puzzles, some puzzles seem rehashed from first game.
Recommendation: works as standalone entry in Layton series but feels a tad stale after Curious Village. Obviously fans of the series will enjoy this title, but I would recommend some time in between playing this game and Curious Village or Unwound Future.
The sound design in this just tickles my brain so much it's amazing. The little pop when you interact with something, even some of the "typing" sounds when people speak, the little coin jingle, I swear it hits a sweet spot
Yet another JRPG where most of its conflicts originally arose due to people bizarrely not talking to each other about important stuff.
I spent the last portion of the game internally screaming "WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST SAY SOMETHING TO THEM FFS". I feel like my patience for this weak sort of narrative has really gone down over the years ರ╭╮ರ
I swear, puzzles are somehow tied into the economy of the Layton world. I met one character who wanted to exchange a puzzle for a train ticket. And there are other instances where puzzles seem to be perfectly viable payment for services rendered. This is a really bizarre world.
Also it's super super annoying that the spot your differences has one picture that is LARGER than the other! So it often looks like you spotted a difference, but actually part of the photo is just cropped out!
I like spot the differences puzzles, but the fact you have to do it three times in a row while waiting for the whole loading animation is super obnoxious. Why can't the game just let you select all three spots in one go?
Definitely enjoying the general aesthetic game better than Curious Village so far.
I've never played a Professor Layton game before... but I am having a ton of fun with this one! The puzzles are challenging, the story is fun, and the atmosphere is just delightful. Really a great game to play with a cup of hot cocoa after a long day at work!
