A metroidvania that doesn't ask you to go back to the place you died to recover your resources, let's you teleport to a save point anytime you want and tells you when you've found everything in a room?

HELL YEAH! Gimme that! So delicious.

I've decided to cancel my PS Plus Essential suscription, so I'm starting to play all the games form the last couple of years that interest me, starting with this one.

Those relatively small rooms filled with enemies made me realise that one big problem with the game is how the game shows attacks. See, since you play as this smol helpless girl your attacks are actually spirits of former bosses that attack for you. But because they are former enemies they look very similar to other enemies: muddy, brown and rotten. So when there's a lot of stuff on screen it's very hard to know what's you and what's some other horrible abomination. They should've changed the sprites for your attacks to be more distinct. It would've fit with the narrative and made the gameplay much better. But I suspect they didn't have the budget for alternate sprites.

I've been in that liminal space between games lately.

I've been in that liminal space between games lately.

Bilewater drained me of any motivation to continue with Silksong, although it's still installed in case I forget and want to pick it up again.

I went back to The Witcher 3. I had to start a whole new game because I remembered fuck all about the game. It's not sticking with me. I like the world but the gameplay doesn't feel good. I know that the game wants me to "prepare" before engaging with monsters by studying their weaknesses and concocting oils and traps, but I can beat any encounter with light attack + dodge. Besides, the process of alchemy is not enjoyable. The UI is terrible and even when I try to do things "the right way" I realise that I don't have the correct plant and there is no indication of where to get it.

I then tired Blasphemous, since it was like 85% off a few days ago. The pixel art and atmosphere are great but there is something about the movement that is very unsatisfying. It feels stiff and clunky.

Blasphemous reminded me that I had dropped Ender Lilies months ago. Last night I picked it up again. I had a better time. I think the soundtrack is carrying the game. I might stick to that one a bit more.

What I to love, surprisingly, is the music. It's calming but melancholic and melodic.

I also love how it changes subtly in different parts of each map, or as response to being in certain places or going through menus. It's fantastic.

What I still is not growing on me is the contact damage and the aggressively tracking ranged attacks.

I like this game but the insane difficulty really tests my patience. These boss fights make Elden Ring feel like Kirby in comparison!

Reached ending C today. I took issue with some of the boss design and the fact that late game enemies all but force you to block instead of dodging, but this is still hands down the best metroidvania that I've played recently - and I went for 100% achievements.

This seems to be the kind of game I’ve been looking for as I attempted to trudge through my last few Metroidvania titles. In its first couple hours I found an exploration game with a focus on challenging, deliberately-paced combat that avoids so many pitfalls that can make similar games feel tedious and frustrating. Checkpoints are never too far away, generous fast travel and fun movement options are available very quickly, you’re always gaining XP to progress your character but never lose anything on death… This is the kind of balance I enjoy, a tougher take on many aspects of the Igavania formula that delivers what I consider to be the fun part of a hard game like this, without all of the boring time waste. There are so many upgrades and new enemy abilities to absorb into your arsenal, combined with several totally distinct zones visited early on, Souls-esque lore delivery, really nice understated music and rainy atmosphere—it’s just been a constant flow of interesting stuff.

I mean it's not Hollow Knight caliber but still offers great fun and more than 20 hours of gameplay.

World design is great. Gameplay varies, so many skills, collectibles, bosses.

I mean it's actually 4 stars but whatever, i'm in a good mood today.

Started this on Switch yesterday, looks great and runs well. Seems very derivative so far, without necessarily its own thing going for it. Will see how it goes. Good 2D Souls clone so far.

P.S. Awful title by the way, generic yet irritating, also I keep remembering it as Elder Lillies.

Very charming game. Considering the setting though I'm not sure charming is the correct word. I really like the idea behind it and it's executed fairly well. Music and atmosphere is great though I wish combat was a teeny bit faster. I get what theyre going for in regards to difficulty but it feels just a little bit too stiff. …

That aside though, Ive made the mistake of playing an early access game and I just can't seem to learn my lesson. Theres just something so disheartening about getting hit with a "This area is not available in the early acess version" and just going "oh.... I guess I'm done". Looking forward to the full release.
