I'm finding it a bit challenging to write a helpful review of this game, because so much of the enjoyment comes from its humor, and humor is so subjective. I've been a fan of Adult Swim since its debut and Mr. Roiland's work since Acceptable TV, so I frequently laughed out loud while playing this.
I really enjoyed the collectathon platformer and adventure game elements, which felt like the best fit for Trover's postmodern (and, let's be honest, intentionally obnoxious) tone. I could take or leave the combat: It's simple and repetitive, overstaying its welcome just a bit. I occasionally found its controls a bit floaty, but it's unclear if that's because I didn't play in VR and didn't always have the clearest vantage point.
Nitpicks aside, Trover earns its place in a pretty short list of comedic games I find funny and fun to play.
Visually is really basic, it reminded me of all those cartoon tie in released around 2005, and sound wise is also nothing special (the enemies lines are so repetitive you will truly want to kill them).
The gameplay is also nothing special and rough, with the combat being super basic, until the point when you can at least throw stuff which makes it a bit more engaging.
The funniest thing is actually trying to find all the green creatures, which is easy for the most part but since there isn't anything more exciting to do it's the only thing really giving you that dopamine rush.
The story per se is also nothing that great, considering what the creator of Rick and Morty have used us to.

The reason I still give it 3 stars is that, despite being a very basic game in mostly all directions, I still got attached to Trover, and I think the way he talks and relates to you makes him feel very alive. I did really feel like I was helping him and I could feel him in general.
It felt like I was there with him in a sense, and this is not …

It felt like I was there with him in a sense, and this is not that easy, and made the VR experience a bit more immersive.
The other characters are also funny, quirky and, most importantly, believable. I also really liked how they keep talking even after you go away or are done with what you needed to know. It feels like they are just hanging there talking about their own shit.
I also got surprised by them reacting to my own actions (even if in a limited way) like going away while they are talking or coming back after leaving.
They are small touches but helped in making the characters feeling alive.
This is actually the only thing that really makes the experience special and mildly unique, and what made me keep playing till the end (and also wondering if I should have also played the DLC, but it was already enough so nope).

I would not advise this game honestly, I think it's very much skippable, but if you are curious to check out a game by Justin Roiland, it's very short anyway, so you could just try it and get along with Trover!
The game is pretty funny, very clever use of puzzles, enemies, and 4th wall to make you laugh. If you have played High On Life, you will know what sort of humor to expect, it is a much smaller package than that game but I think is a welcomed fact.
Gameplay wise it is sort of a puzzle game with some platforming, neither is particularly challenging and never explored fully. Combat is the weakest part of the game, it is tedious and monotonous, slam that button until everything dies, it could be just be ignored if it was maybe a fight here and there just to get some laughs, but the game actually forces places where you fight waves which is just tedious.
The puzzles are more interesting and don't overstay their welcomed, i wish they had explored that more.
Unfortunately, most characters are voiced by Roiland, and his style gets extremally tiring, some stuff just drags on and on and on. While some sections are very funny, otherwise are just milked and lose their effect. High on life had better pacing and thansk to other voice actors switched things around with the humor. That is why I am glad …

Overall, if you can get this game on a sale there is reason not to check it out, at worst you get a couple of laughs for an hour or two, and turn it off, and best you get more laughs for 3 or 5 hours. win win either way.
Let's start of from the fact that I liked "Accounting+", which has the same feature of extensive humorous rambing voiceover. And I like Rick and Morty.
This looks very similar to Accounting+ on the surface, but it's not good.
Accounting is short and fast paced. You quickly switch through different worlds there and there's always something new happening there.
In Trover, the gameplay is shallow, there is no challenge and little variety, so it felt tedious. The story is extremely predictable and drawn out. Even the humour quickly goes downhill of poop jokes in this one. They tried quantity over quality and it failed for me.
I hated this game and yet I completed it for the sake of completion :/
Man, what's wrong with me, halfway though the game I got bored, but thought "well, I almost beat it, might as well complete it" (aka sunk cost fallacy)
I thought I learned to drop games when they get stale, but I guess not :(
I wish I'd dropped it or just skimmed the plot summary on YouTube yet once again.
I'm not saying this game is a masterpiece but it's exactly the kind of fun, weird & trashy humour I expect from a Justin Roiland game.
And it's quite well done !
