as an avid gamer since i was 3 years old growing up on the SNES ; i have experienced my fair share of RPG's and JRPGS i have to say this game is remarkable and exceeds even the bests IMO.

As someone with ADD i usually don't care or can't follow the story or RPGS but with this game i actually care and understand the story along with each characters story/backstory and was so impressed with how unique all the stories were considering how hard it is to be original in fantasy. You will not be let down with any of the story aspects if you try to understand.

The combat system is so unique and fun and makes the old style of just spending mana to cast spells feel so outdated. It also incentivizes you to use different characters/and moves to prevent you from just spamming your best move. You eventually are rotating in up to 8 characters as opposed to these other games that give you casts of 8 to 10 characters.. but only lets you use 3 or 4 of them max!

It really just seems like this one creator just played all the classic RPGS and thought of every possible quality of life change to make them all better.

-Using 8 chars instead of 3-4 -Beautiful music and art -Clan Upgrades -Customize characters through armor/gems -Dialogue box's so you know who you need to speak to -Clear maps/fast travels -the few sidequests in the game are meaningful and fun -achievements give in game bonuses -game eventually lets you know where items you need drop from

Love that this game gives you 6 party members almost right away, and that it let's you use them all in battle together. They are all a bit flat as characters so far though. I hope they show more depth over time and start talking amongst themselves more.

Sadly, my saved game got corrupted. I was on act 3 I believe. I would definitely play this game again once I've forgotten most of the story. It's just hard to go trough it again. I haven't played Chrono Trigger before, or any other JRPGs aside from Final Fantasy, so I have nothing to compare this game to. I just …

This game single handedly renewed my love for old school style rpgs.Developers pay attention. This is how you do it. This game does not rely on nostalgia alone, it introduces a simple yet complex combat system using atb overdrive. The storyline is right up there with the best I've ever experienced. It starts very nice and is a very nice homage to classic JRPG mas it really drags for too long with a lackluster ending imo.

The opening scene made me realize I'd probably be better off playing Chrono Trigger again instead of this. There used to be a time when I would have killed for this kind of nostalgia fest, but I don't think that's what I want anymore. Makes me feel all sorts of ways about backing Sea of Stars, lol. Anyway, I'm …

Anyway, I'm sure this is fine, but the immediate nostalgia barrage from this game was a bit much and I had to drop it.

This is one of those games I was really excited for. It really delivered well. The difficulty is top notch. It's just that, &*^$, I dont like the ending.

The game was difficult enough and by the time I reached the end...I felt like Anakin Skywalker burning in hot lava/magma.

Is it an output of bad writing? no. It was …

Is it an output of bad writing? no. It was well written. The ending though is definitely a gut punch.

It ends the same way as I feel about Solasta.

The combat isn't very deep or difficult at the moment, but that may change later in the game, I'm only about 2 hours in.

I am happy to see that it is a German developer (Deck 13) who made it and that they got help with Kickstarter and on top of that some funding from the German government. It's hard to get that funding and there's not a lot of money in the pot anyway, so Indy developers often have to go without.

I haven't played any of the games it's influenced by, so I can't compare it to them.

This game is a lesson to the future of game development,

Triple-A titles being made by a massive team have lower potential that solo developed games.

Well thought out story.

Strong combat system.

No hand holding.

So as my first completed game of the year I'd say 2023 is off to a very charming start. Chained Echoes definitely treads familiar ground, with its blatant inspiration pulled from many SNES era RPGs, most notably Chrono Trigger. That being said Chrono Trigger is my all-time favorite game, so I'm not complaining. What held it back from being a game like Shovel Knight or Hollow Knight, a game that simultaneously pays homage to its inspirations while eclipsing them, (besides the obvious lack of Knight in the title) was the writing. While certainly not bad I think it took itself a little too seriously with its tone and it kinda kept it from having that very cohesive identity that the great RPGs have. Still absolutely a blast with some very fun gameplay mechanics, and an infinitely charming artstyle but something I'd only recommend to people like me who can't get enough of that era.
