It sacrifices some of the quiet scary moments of the first game but in return turns the action up to 11. Really feels like a roller coaster through a haunted house and I'm 100% here for it. Wonderful expansions to the world building of the first game as well.

Not as good as 1

It’s been a while since I played these back in high school, and the time I was pretty obsessed. After playing the remake and absolutely loving it, I was curious how og would hold up. It’s… alright.

Graphically it’s still impressive, the atmosphere is there. But I really got so bored of it near the end, it gets very repetitive and slowly loses all interest,

Also, not having a map sucked. It makes it feel way more linear and like you’re just on rails. The enemies don’t feel very unique compared to the original and I just don’t think it does enough to stand out and be worth playing.

Voto: 8.2/10

Dead Space 2 is an extremely polished, intense sequel to a game that was already those things. Dead Space 2's main weakness would have to be its lack of innovation from the original. It literally felt like a continuation of the first game. That's okay though, since Dead Space was an extremely enjoyable modern survival horror experience. While I might bemoan the death of the classic survival horror genre, the fact of the matter is that I have a lot of respect for the Dead Space series carrying the torch for survival horror in the modern age. Sure, it's not as scary as the old Silent Hills, Resident Evils or Fatal Frames, it's a bit too easy, and many areas look identical. However, It's a thrill ride that's full of great (and gory) moments.

When playing Dead Space 2, I often thought about the other great survival horror sequels that improved upon an excellent concept by refining the gameplay, improving the story and generally, making the entire experience superior to the original. I also just finished the Resident Evil 2 remake, and I kept thinking how much I appreciated that sequel more than the original, and the same can be said of Silent Hill 2. These sequels expanded what was originally presented and made what could be argued to be the best games in their franchises. Dead Space 2 isn't just a welcome improvement over the original game - also great in its own right - but it proves that the Dead Space franchise deserved to be placed alongside Resident Evil and Silent Hill in terms of great horror franchises.

Whereas Resident Evil 2 and Silent Hill 2 simply took the idea from the first game and introduced new characters, Dead Space 2 actually attempts to follow up the original's story with the same character, and does it quite well. It's hard to imagine at the end of the first game where this story could go, yet Visceral Games found a way to expand on this story in a captivating and often horrifying way. In playing Dead Space 2, I didn't find the monsters as terrifying as I did the reminders of Isaac's past and what he was struggling to let go.

Yet Dead Space 2 did still make me jump at times, as it's the rare game that knows how to actually scare. There were several times where I thought I had a strong position against what was clearly going to be an upcoming attack, only for a monster to crawl out of a ceiling or a vent and grab onto me, completely surprising me. Dead Space 2 doesn't just defy expectations in its scares though, I found the story to consistently surprise me. I won't give away the ending, but I love how the game makes you think its ending on this down note, holding on that moment for almost too long, before pulling the player right out of it. This morose ending would've been perfect and thematically fitting, but the one I ultimately got was even better.

While it hasn't been that long since I've played the first Dead Space, I tend to remember getting lost and doubling back on many places I had already been to. This often left me confused as to where I was supposed to go, but thankfully, Dead Space 2 is much easier to navigate, rarely asking you to return to old locations, and always pushing the player forward. The navigation system that allows you to find your objective or other helpful tools is a godsend, and very rarely was I ever in a position where I wasn't sure what to do.

At almost a decade old, it's remarkable how well Dead Space 2 has held up. Usually when I go back to play older games, I can see the limitations that were put in place at the time, but not here. This game still looks great and I never felt like I was confused because of how games had evolved since Dead Space 2 was released. If this came out today, it would still be a must play.
