Preliminary: Wow what an advanced feeling intro, and you move so fast! Finally an action adventure game I don't feel like a slug moving around. The Look is a bit cluttered but I bet this was willlld for early 92. So far I haven't even had to look at the Manual and figured out how to equip etc and got through the "tutorial" but I will read the manual now just to make sure I get everything out of the game I can. I likely will wind up having to turn to a guide or a map, but let me enjoy the early game pride I get for exploring sans one :-p Omg and I love the wide swipe of your sword right off the bat, no more awkward angling of the early Zeldas!
Early Game
I am definitely seeing the huge influence on the Dark Cloud series, which I loved so much as a kid. And the game continues to be fast-paced, with a nice groovy dungeon tune, fun gameplay that's like what I wanted from Gauntlet but with so much more to do. Only thing that doesn't feel very advanced compared to the other games I've been playing is the pace of the text, but I suppose I've just become impatient with that with age :-p
For whatever reason the combat is reminding me more of Ys (which is soooo beloved for me) and Hydlide than the usual reference of Zeldas. Because it's like your best bet is to stand just a bit to their side, not to the center, like in Ys. I dunno ha. I suppose that's just my early game strategy and I'm thinking of similarities with games I love. I'm fighting a virus (and winning quickly!) so I told myself to just play briefly tonight then do chill OSRS semi-afk stuff, but this definitely has me hooked and forgetting my sniffles. Good stuff. (Ok I will stop typing but I'm loving my sidestep technique, I just sort of step to the side and get a good angle to kill thejm before they can get me. I'm also loving that I haven't had to turn to a guide at all cuz the gameplay is intuitive and straightforward while still feeling like n adventure game with RPG elements etc. I pray it can keep this momentum and be the first signal of the start of the era I so love of mid 90s thru 2000s action-adventures being fully immersive, tho I admit I have been heavily on a point and click adventure kick and crave)
Ok ok for real I'll stop, but yessss the Tulip I saved being the one who gives me the foundation to a sorta item retrieval/Metroidvania task that will unlock an elevator in the Underground Castle, the way the Tulip moved and talked and the quest at hand all reminded me of Tomba ahhhh!
I've been really enjoying the Dark Cloud esque Look, this must've been a huge influence, I toko this screenshot just to capture some of the Look tho I've been enjoying the game too much to really take breaks to screenshot (tho I should be resting to fight this virus lol) my only complaint about the Look is how often there are scrolling foreground and background things like clouds and water, gets my eyes a bit off. Tho it's a nice touch for a 92 game
It's really fun grouping enemies together and getting them at a good angle to rock them all at once hehehe. And yessss to the crab walk technique recommended by a villager :-p I'm loving these retrieval/Hobbit PC game/Tomba/etc-type quests, but I am not really understanding how they tie to the ActRaiser god sim situation ha
Also, some of the menu sound effects sound just like the later RE menu sound. And oooo I'm getting sucked into a painting, always like that in games like in an arcade compilation I had for Dreamcast and in Super Mario 64
Unfortunately the music of the second dungeon is, well, very dungeon-y which I never love. But overall the Sound has been really good. I simply cannot put this down lol.
(Okay don't worry this is from Day 2, I did finally stop last night lol. I would've played all day but I had to work my part time job). OMG I love this "world map" of sorts now that I finally finished (or at least for now finished) the first town! And it's so well-paced I was jussssst starting to tire of the songs I had been exposed to so far and then it changed it up to a new area and new tune!
Omg okay and there's even moles digging underground mazes, so I am right to see a Tomba connection :-p This game is so well-designed, tho some may find it too easy, but I love how shortcuts are made so backtracking isn't a tedious part of the game, rather a fun adventure-y part of the game. And I love that it is a doable game. Which is important for the type of gamer I am. I do wish some of the tunes were more spectacular because this could be an Ultimate, and I wish I had more connections with this series, but I see this growing more and more important in my life ahead.
I love the colors of the world map type thing, and the Look of this next area
Mid Game
I think this is mid game ish? I dunno I'm actually not using a guide for once ha but I decided to start using a guide like a checklist to make sure I didn't miss anything in each area. I still am just fully engrossed in this game.
Alright with this volcano Durean place the difficulty is definitely increasing. I started using savestates, tho I haven't really come close to dying, it's just so chaotic I'm nervous lol. And I've started looking to the guide to make sure I don't waste my time, especially with the annoying jump out of water enemies that more and more areas are having. Still, I'm loving the game, and the "annoying" enemy is something I'd see in Zelda and other well-respected and beloved games.
I'm confused the guide is acting like this lava floor shouldn't be a big deal but it's absolutely wrecking me. Oh wow so the Mermaid's Tear was the solution like I thought and I should've just ignored the guide >.< Back to no guide for me lol.
Lol yessss we released Grandpa. But uff teh difficulty is definitely increasing in later-mid game.
Yessss to the Chip's Challenge/Pokemon-esque ice part where I was able to solve a "puzzle" quite handily. it's one of those things where you go in the direction you step in continuously until you run into something. I had a lot of experience with that as a kid with thsoe 2 games I mentioned :-p
I can't deny I am really craving another PC graphic adventure game a la Monkey Island 2 and Hook, but this is great too! Dunno what it is about 91 and 92 PC graphic adventure games that have really taken over the limelight from the late 80s console platformers and action-adventures.
And a Phoenix item retrieval side mission, the Tomba similarities keep coming! This game is longer than I expected. Now that I have the sword that can defeat metal enemies, I can backtrack (thanks to a guide telling me what things I can get haha), and it's quite painless backtracking which is nice. And commendable.
End Game
Yessss I'm in a miniature model town for a dungeon. I always love that in games, when it's like you've been shrunk and/or normal objects are much larger than you. Too bad they're reusing a tune, I believe the one from Leo's Painting. I'm declaring this end game, tho it might really be late-mid-game heh. But I believe there's only one more area (and maybe an extra final boss area type situation) left, based on the world map.
I'm definitely back into this after taking a break for the rest of that night. It's a game I think best played in 1-2 hour chunks. Can't decide if will be a favorite or not, but definitely looking like a 5 star. Would take something glaring to change that. The length is a bit too much for me, but still loving it and feels like such a modern game.
Yesss good tune from the Singer you bring the Harp String in the King's area :-p
Omg this airship boss is obnoxiously difficult. And it has way too much HP. What a lamely designed boss that was. I only finished it thanks to savestates, and it definitely bogged down the momentum.
Well right as I was gettingt o that burnout point, luckily the last levels weren't too long and while difficult, were quite well-designed imo. And I'm loving this Phoenix spell. And the guide told me a good grinding spot, and you know how I love a grind :-p Nice epic music at the last area too (oh wait that was the sky area tune I've heard a million times, I'm losing my mind lol I wasn't even in the last area smh). Here goes nothing for the final boss!
Good ending/credits tune, I don't like how Lisa's character was written but other than that, great stuff. An ending needs a sunset and they did not fail :-p

Lol that no one noticed the beam of light. Sadge. And lol that your only option was Yes when she asked the promise. Lol kind of a silly post-credits ending plot/scene, but cute enough
Look: 8.5/10 Officially at the era of classic SNES/Genesis era and even tho this didn't set any new precedents, it's epitomal of that era.
Sound: 8.5/10 Good stuff, but rarely quite got over to that truly special/sentimental level. Tho this ending tune is real good and both the Look and Sound may grow on me in future replays
Play: 9.5/10 Very linear in many ways but also enoguh Metroidvania and adventure game aspects to make me happy :-p At first I was going to give this a 9 but the more I think about it, I was absolutely hooked even with the occasional burnouts and that obnoxiously difficult boss. But I kept feeling pride in figuring out ways to work with the enemies, even in the last area, so one boss shouldn't deplete the fact I had a Castlevania level of hook with this
Feel: 9.5/10 Excited for the later games of this series! The Play, and influences on later games like Tomba, boosted this .5
Attachment: 9/10 I definitely will replay this and see how it grows on me over time! And the rest of the series too
Overall: 9/10
Completion: 100%
Playtime: ~13 hours
