Car. Foggy night. Mystical landscapes. And if you want to work - titans. Titan Chaser is a surreal driving and walking experience, where your job is to scout giant creatures and use the light to drive them off without fighting or killing.

Needs more time in the oven
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

I feel bad giving this game a less-than-stellar rating, being a one-man project from a current Ukrainian refugee, but, even though it is unique and affordable, it's also incomplete.

Titan Chaser is a low budget indie walking simulator with some puzzle elements. It consists of 4 nights where you solve problems related to the titular titans.

I really liked the concept, the atmosphere and the whole vibe the game has going on. I don’t know what is exactly, but it seems inspired by things like X-files/Twin Peaks/Silent Hill.

The story is very light but presented in an interesting way, since you learn everything from the short monologues the protagonist has. Unfortunately, the voice acting, while good, it’s recorded on a very low quality mic. It's something you might get used to it, but it is very annoying. On the other hand, the small amount of music presented is luckily quite good.

The game world consist of a small open world, where all the events take place. It's pretty easy to traverse and the car you get feels pretty good but basic. You also don't get any GPS or a waypoint system to help you move around, you'll have to …

You also don't get any GPS or a waypoint system to help you move around, you'll have to read the map and use landmarks. This is probably the biggest point of contingency for your average player, because, while I like this sort of thing, many don't (as you can see from the steam reviews). I personally never got lost and understanding where to go was never too hard, but your mileage might vary.

Unfortunately, this cool presentation starts to come apart when you look at the details and the “game” aspect of the game. For example, parts of the map are clearly unfinished, with textures clipping or floating above the terrain, and certain models being obvious placeholders (with weirdly inconsistent sizes and styles). Also, even though it isn’t a graphically intensive game, I did have severe frame drops more than once, so I imagine it isn’t a particularly polished game. enter image description here

As I said before, there are 4 nights, each one with a puzzle to solve. The second and third nights are very similar in concept, with the same simple puzzle. The first one is better, but it’s also needlessly long, becoming tedious. So overall, the best one is the fourth one. I should note that while I keep calling them “puzzles”, they aren’t complex at all, as long you don’t get lost in the open world.

In conclusion, I think this one needed more time in the oven. I don’t know if the core problems with the gameplay can be solved with more dev-time, but it definitely would have been a more concise and consistent product.

If Stas Shostak (dev) ever revisits Titan Chaser with more content, polish or a director’s cut, I would definitely check it out, even change my review, but right now it is just a cool demo which might have worked better in a compilation such as Dread X.

Has anyone played this? Know anything about it? Looks like it could be a really good little excursion for a day or two. I LOVE the concept. Thoughts?
