Meh this game is something of a tragedy. What looked quite promising became an experience I enjoyed less as I went on. And towards the end, i absolutely hated it. enter image description here
Regicide is a neat idea. Like, I think its a really COOL idea. I like chess time to time and have played a few alternate versions of chess, so the idea to add and modify in some TBT concept to a classic board game seemed pretty neat, quite creative and to top it off with the gory glory kill visuals that are Battle Chess inspired really does sell this game. but this game has problems and some bad design aspects that become increasingly apparent as you play it: enter image description here So the glory kill visuals are cool, every enemy has a unique kill animiation for every other enemy. You place as space marines fighting orks. (and some missions later you actually fight space marines too, and i guess in multiplayer you can fight orks vs orks) However, there aren't THAT many differnet kinds of units in which you field a fight with, and rather than fielding a whole army of pieces you are gated through small little 'puzzle-missions' with... the same pieces. …

This makes the kill animations get a bit stale and reudenant all too quickly because you aren't killing random pieces left and right you are killing the exact same 3 units the whole first half of the game for hours,..

I mentioned puzzle misssions (and that's literally ALL that the campaign is) well these are kinda neat initially but I discovered a bit of a problem with it. These missions have 'cover' and debris which makes things a bit more interesting through area denial but it can also mean that if the enemy unit fields a pawn towarsd the end of a barricade and has no moves left, you get a stalemate, which is complete bullshit when you had a long battle and there are two pieces left. its an easy (and stupid) mistake to make. And I had to repeat god knows how many missions because of this little unfortunate aspect of 'Regicide'.

Oh, You also don't have pawn promotion in any of the missions, generally pawns never make it to the other side though... So between the lack of promotion and the amount of debris in the way, combined with the erratic placement of units means pawns have limited utility. You can only use them to shoot pretty much, and then when they are gone use your other pieces to capture. It's a bit force/convoluted/boring.

The AI is very smart 99% of the time, but there will be moments where its blind and confused and makes a few mistakes in a row that lasts a few rounds (best i can tell) Not sure what triggers this. IT feels like a bug though.

The UI leaves some things to be desired. Its not terrible but you dont get to know what abilities the enemy is playing. Well you do, but you dont know what they actually do, you just see the names (and thats only if its targeting a unit) Sometimes if you click too quickly you have to click again, and other times you can click to initiate commands even though the visual cues dotn represent what you are doing. It's just annoying.

being able to move and capture a piece and then attack 3 times with diff units is a really cool idea but often due to RNG (and human-like precision/error) you will make small mistakes. You might miss with that one final shot to finish off the second enemy unit, or you might leave him with 1 HP left. The computer however, doesnt seem to make mistakes like this and can One-Two you with very good efficiency by the end of the third chapter in the campagin.

In the end this is a puzzle or drill game that doesnt feel like chess and doesnt feel like TBT either. It's a Puzzle-strategy game where you do something over and over until it finally just works or you get lucky. It's okay I guess but not an enjoyable experience due to the way it is executed. There is also some needless XP mechanics thrown in which translates into pay to win in order to slap on new skins of other Space Marine factions (which are totally not necessary)

This game should have been something a bit more. But like so many GW games there are lackluster mechanics and design issues, and in this one its a blend of some aspects of the game design compounded by a total lack of customization of your units. Why if you could actually improve certain units or your command powers, then this game would be more driving, but in the end this was a freaking disappointment of a game that gave me a very different experience that I was expecting.

I suppose if you play this for multiplayer with other people who are chess players, it could be much more fun, (cause then you get to tweak your army and use your powers) and there is no cover/obstruction or limited units. But it's hard to appreciate the TBT elements as they stand, and in the 'campaign' its even less so.

fark. i hate putting things down on the abandoned shelf but i'm not having a good time with this. just 5 missions away too from the ending. but its becoming absolutely obnoxious towards the end in how the missions play out.
