It's a decent third person shooter.

The dialogue wasn't great but it was a laugh anyway. I was really hesitant about getting this game because of the rating. I have tell that I was pleasantly surprised. It has Gears third person cover system called vertical cover and familiar sounds, Spec Ops voice actor, and its combat is three dimensional. It has flying mechanics too. It may not be the prettiest game out there but this game is simply fun.

Shooting the Watchers makes for a good time and you could do worse for how cheap this game is. I completely recommend trying this game if not only for the soundtrack. McCreary is the composer for this game's outstanding music score and he also did Battlestar Galatica, so you know it is great.

If you're looking for a fun game where you get to fly around like The Rocketeer and shoot at bad guys then give this a try. If, on the other hand, you only like polished, big budget games then this one isn't for you.

Enter the Void

After finishing Psychonauts 2 I had a strange desire to play something deeply mediocre. Dark Void scratched that itch.

It starts off like an Uncharted clone, complete with jungle setting and Nolan North voiceacting. Pretty basic cover-based shooter with the hook being the inclusion of "Vertical Cover". It's cover, but up! It is simple mindless fun.

But that's before entering THE VOID - a big bland brown area with lots of rocky cliffs and pillar formations. But now you have a jetpack!

Bouncing between cover-based shooting, hovering while shooting, to full-on aerial combat is a lot of fun, allowing a sense of speed and movement that most games in this genre lack. You can hijack UFOs, which is also pretty great.

There is the bones of something really special here, but in the end it feels rushed and unfinished. The story is a disjointed mess. It is aiming for pulpy fun, but the characters are forgettable, the premise is poorly established and the pacing is all over the place.

It also takes too long to get your jetpack, and then they take it away again for a while, because why would you want your game to be fun?

Dark Void's issues probably could have been fixed by more development time or a sequel that iterates on what works. The core idea is great, but the game fumbles everything else.

Maybe pick it up on Goozex or something...
