It's just a bad Ace Combat clone.

With impressive graphics and relatively smooth gameplay, Project Wingman gives air combat fans lack of innovation, quiet audio and a somewhat wonky UI. It may well be the most frustrating game I’ve ever unabashedly loved by making me feel like the hotshot pilot I’ve never been, and the only price I have to pay is a little bit of my …

It may well be the most frustrating game I’ve ever unabashedly loved by making me feel like the hotshot pilot I’ve never been, and the only price I have to pay is a little bit of my sanity every time I die and remember that there aren’t any checkpoints.

A really fun Ace Combat clone. It manages to capture the feel, the music, the soul and even the corny dialogue. The game is a bit too easy compared to AC7 due to the lack of mission timer and infinite flares but overall still a good game. I guess I'll try emulate the old PS2 AC games now.

Project Wingman is a great air combat game! It has the key features for playing such genre and the team was very wise to re-utilize the old Ace Combat formula. I started to play this game and then I returned to play the old and first games of the Ace Combat series, for Project Wingman brings back those old good memories from arcade games. Well, I will try to resume the main points about this nice game!

Story

Story is not the main point of these games, but it delivers a good plot. The world is changed after a cataclysm and the current nations are no more present. The new nations face their own issues and the player joins the war as a mercenary ace fighter with the codename Monarch. As usual, the player has the task to free a government from oppression. In early Ace Combat series games, usually the player was tasked to free the nation from a terrorist coup d'état.

Gameplay

The gameplay is marvelous! It is not a flight sim game, so don't expect realism in plane control! It is an arcade game! I played using a Xbox 360-like controller and the result was amazing! The maneuvering is very smooth and the missiles variety is great! The key commands are very similar to those who used to play Ace Combat, so the feeling is very natural for previous players of such genre.

Missions

The missions are very funny and sometimes tough, depending the level. There is a good AI support, but not always, so cover yourself and don't be an easy aim! I have played in the normal level and the campaign was between "just right" and "tough", depending the mission. I don't remember missions like the "ravine ones" from the Ace Combat series, but many others were similar, like those in which the plane almost has to enter a facility to destroy a target or having to handle ships, tanks, etc.

Plane variety

The names do not correspond to real ones and it is a little bit confusing at the beginning. The fighters have their tier (there is a wikia, so you could check there if with doubts), their own missiles types, hardpoints, etc. Well, considering we are in 2021 and the game was launched last year, I still don't know why these games don't bring the features of modern air fighters such the F-35 and others. I don't know if nowadays the vendors avoid to allow such simulations (even in games) because spying key features of their own planes. Anyway, the player can buy planes as progressing through the campaign (there is also two other modes, the conquest and free flight, although I just focused my gameplay in campaign).

Pros

  • Great graphics.
  • Plane variety.
  • Funny missions.
  • Campaign mode with satisfactory plot.

Cons

  • The planes could be based on more recent ones.
