Tonic Trouble is a 3D platforming video game by Ubisoft Montreal. The story follows the main character, Ed, after a magic potion spills on the Earth and causes vegetables to become living killers. The game was received poorly; critics cite poor controls, a wordy exposition, and sloppy graphics (on the N64 version). The N64 version of the game is a port of the PC version with noticeable differences, such as a substantially different opening due to the lack of processing power needed to render cutscenes, and different music in certain places. The game is often compared to another game published by Ubisoft called Rayman 2: The Great Escape, because both are 3D platformers, both have main characters of a similar design (hands and feet without arms or legs), and both were released around the same time. A great early 3D platformer that stands the test of time

Platform:

Nintendo 64 version.

Graphics/Sound:

The graphics look great, even from today's perspective. The artstyle choice, the characters and the scenery all work great with low poly graphics so it aged surprisingly well. The textures are nice and colorful too. I liked music in the main level which sounded a lot like trash sci-fi soundtrack but the boss theme was seriously underwhelming.

Gameplay:

If you played Rayman 2 you will surely be reminded of it quite a lot. Many of the main gameplay mechanics are the same. It also has the same unfolding skill mechanics as Rayman. The levels are varied in focus, a few are focused on speed, others are focused on solving puzzles. The controls are good too, and I didn't have many problems with the camera throughout which is one of the main drawbacks of most early 3D platformers.

Difficulty:

The game isn't very hard, extra lifes seem to respawn every time you enter or exit a level, so you can stock up on lifes very easily. The worst enemies for me were the flying shooting folks, because it always took me so long to whip out my pea shooter and aim at them so I always …

The worst enemies for me were the flying shooting folks, because it always took me so long to whip out my pea shooter and aim at them so I always got hit, and they seemed to respawn every now and then too.

Conclusion:

If you turned this down because it's a Rayman copycat or if (for the PC version) you thought an advertising game couldn't be good, then you thought wrong. It's a good game, it's unique enough in gameplay not to be confused with Rayman even though the style reminds a lot of it. And the leveldesign is extremely good throughout.
