Both the SNES and PC versions are beautiful (imo) and have great, mysterious music and the potential for great, unique Feels (I am not familiar with this movie but it has a very quirky Monkeybone-esque quality from what I am seeing here), but alas the level design and gameplay of both just suffer. I loaded this thinking it was the sequel to Cool Spot. What the hell is this game? Seems to be based on a movie I never heard of, with a mix of live action and cartoon. So I got killed or arrested or game over nearly constantly from all the cheap instant fail content. The controls were stiff with inability to change position or direction in mid air. I eventually figured out how to attack and grapple up, and looted and killed everything in the town. At that point I had no idea what to do so I looked up a walkthrough. Oh those dumbass things bouncing around were car keys that I had to pick up for an awful driving sequence that took even more save state scumming to get through. So I went around the candy land looting candy before driving back to town with no progress made and no idea what to do. I had to look up a YouTube video to discover that the written walkthrough was wrong. I was supposed to bring flowers to the bouncer to get inside the club to get a date with the girl. I managed to get past that but Jesus Christ the mechanics behind buying soda from the bartender. He kept moving around and I kept following him mashing buttons. It seemed random when he would offer to sell, and then he flung the soda so hard that it smashed on the floor. I had to press down at the right time to pick up the drink, but it took me several attempts to figure that out and each time cost money! The game was full of stupid wastes of time like that, like the guy outside the bar who robs all your money 1 coin at a time in a prolonged animation that takes a few seconds for each coin. Total disrespect for the player's time.

Then I was stuck again. Missy wanted a gift but I already used flowers, so back to the video. So there was this convoluted nonsense about going to the candy factory and luring the unkillable enemies with milkshakes to get access to the gift box hidden away in the upper corner. Doing that myself would involve suffering through the driving sections again. Fuck that. The video only had about 10 minutes left so the better use of my time was to watch instead of play. The game didn't get any better. While the mix of adventure game and platformer was a little interesting, the mechanics and level design were too poor to make this game even worth watching. It needed to: be less cryptic with both what to do and what was a threat, have smooth responsive controls, actually be fun to play, and have dialogue and story that was worth experiencing.

3.5/10
