cool but not quite right

enter image description hereThe trailer for this one looked pretty interesting and different. I was curious to play it, wanting to play some kind of sim that was a bit unlike most things I see. This game does indeed have it's own ideas and is admirable, however the game is very unfinished and rough. I was about to give up on it after my second gameover being unable to repay my loan, but i gave it a third try and things clicked finally. This game is a bit janky, both the UI, the interface/controls and there is some nasty processor lag, these really need to be fixed because this game is barely serviceable, the text is hard to read, you can't move boxes around, and often the boxes will appear off screen. I cannot imagine this being 'fun' or possible to read this hard to read (but cool looking) typeface on a VR headset. it sounds like a bad time. the camera controls area bit confusing but its mostly annoying and doesnt drastically impede gameplay. the worst thing is the processor lag and a lack of options to tone things down. the city consists of something like 16K buildings and pletny of entities …

I cannot imagine this being 'fun' or possible to read this hard to read (but cool looking) typeface on a VR headset. it sounds like a bad time. the camera controls area bit confusing but its mostly annoying and doesnt drastically impede gameplay. the worst thing is the processor lag and a lack of options to tone things down. the city consists of something like 16K buildings and pletny of entities that are moving about them. The math is surely crunchy under the hood in AdverCity. however i found it fun nonetheless and pleasantly suprised at some of the cool ideas. enter image description here First, the most notable gimmick is the tranistion in and out of cyberspace. Not only does cyberspace look cool, (with higher signature nodes being represented by taller, thicker spikes colored to represent their respective megacorp, while physical space of course has taller skyscrapers, every structure has a differnet presence and potential to advertise varies between worlds) but the soundtrack in this game is something else.... each world has it's own soundtrack that operates as a 'layer' it's almost like an rearrangement or restylization of the same themes, and as you move into one world and out of another it fades into the alternate track, i'm not even a big fan of this particular sountrack (it's okay) but the gimmick enough is a pure win, and it makes the game a very immersive experience. enter image description hereenter image description here second, as you play the game you do figure things out, its not complicated and it's fairly simplistic (maybe boring once you do so) but its still enjoyable to figure out how to place your adverts, where and why. you play with the lay of the land, playing a big part in which corps rise to power and where (and whose compettitors get left behind) you can buy buildings and even 'invest' in realty (sort of?), you can sic hackers onto the bigger dogs of the city, hoping to balance things out. for a game where all you do is advertise, its interesting how you control the city and how the gameplay translates into effects. the city grows, megacorp skyscrapers get taller and cluster. Headquarters can move, and I swear I think they began to congregate in certain districts... I noticed the hackers move in a few buildings away from the HQ i moved into. (uh oh! XD) I had better advertise their competitors and ruin their profits so i can buy them up. an ally is the best weapon. enter image description here unfortuately the game is janky with the proc lag and the whacked out bolted down UI boxes.. its also not clear as you learn how to play. fortunately its not that difficult or complicated. The game is very slow paced, this is one that might be like Terror From the Deep, however, due to the income and expense mechanics its not one that you can leave running unattended all day. Yet, it almost plays a bit like a mix of sim city and cookie clicker. also, there doesnt really seem to be an AI element... so that makes the aspect of playing a bit like a vacuum. My biggest criticism with the game itself is probably the way cash flow and personnel (seem to?) work. Since all income is generated via activce campagisn (and there is no passive income), you must always be building stuff. Otherwise your personnel will drain you eventually. I kind of understand why there would not be passive income mechanic, that would make it too easy. Still it would be nice to pad things a bit.As you aquire buildings, you are more or less supposed to fire the people who work those businesses and just keep the buildings so the other megacorps cant make use of them. rather than being a slum lord i'd like to make use of infra, either getting bonsues with respective businesses (you max out your upgrades with them way too early, in the first 30 mins) or being able to use them in some other way. I can imagine anyone who might play this game is going to feel shortchanged with the lack of utilization of what they 'conquer.' enter image description here In conclusion Advercity is a creative but rough cut, while it has some really good ideas other elements are not quite releaseworthy. I couldnt reccomend the game to anyone despite a lot of aspects of this game I personally quite like (and i was quite determined to patiently conquer the whole city, starting with the hackers first, but it can't be done due to hardware protesting) a combination fo technical flaws and a bit of a boring as malasses type pace with the monotony of what you are doing is a rather bad combination that will create an eventual standstill for anyone who likes the idea of it. the idea is worth a polished revisit, or the outright theft and transmutation of.
