When Lina is about to effortlessly pummel her would-be attackers, the swordsman Gourry Gabriev suddenly announces his presence. Assuming Lina to be a damsel in distress, the foolish yet magnanimous man confronts the brigands in order to rescue her. After defeating them posthaste, the oblivious cavalier decides to escort Lina to Atlas City. Though not very keen on this idea, she ends up accepting his offer. However, without realizing it, Lina has chanced upon a mighty magical item among her most recent spoils. Now two mysterious men are hunting the young magician and her self-proclaimed guardian to obtain this powerful object for apparently nefarious purposes. This way they begin their adventure, one where the fate of the world itself may be at stake. Less

Vapid, With No Draw To Keep Pushing Unless You're A Fan Of The Anime
This review is for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version

Preliminary: Ugh I'm really unsure about this. The character sprites are super lame and not up to par for 94, but some of the detailed secenery is really impressive. Some of the tunes have been annoying, some (namely this first village) have been great. The combat and gameplay so far have been quite standard. And at first I was definitely gonna walk away if you had to go into the menu just to open chests etc like the old Dragon Quests, but there is also a quick action button so that's good. And so far the menu/shop navigation hasn't been too rudimentary. Still, this seems quite mundane for 94 JRPG, and without love for the series Slayers, I doubt I will get through all of it. Unless the music keeps me going I guess... (Oh and I also don't love the humor focus of the plot and vibe so far. And lots of talking without anything genuinely emotional or intense or epic)

Long pauses between leaving/entering palces is another negative. But super cute touch where you can "see" a description and drawing of your saves :-p

It feels very amateurish and it's silly you just select your next destination rather than walk there, but there's something oddly nostalgic and cozy and familiar about this world map and it reminds me of making a game in the original RPG Maker for PS1 (I think the scroll graphic on top and mediocre yet cozy music contributed to that) enter image description here

Yeahhhh as much as I'm kinda enjoying this, without a connection to the anime, there's nothing notable that makes it worth playing through this. I got through teh Dead Volcano and realized it's probly time to call it. It's not bad, just quite inocuous. I basically could jsut hold down the action button for even the boss battles and I had done no grindign so far. The Inn system is annoying in that it doesn't fully heal you. There's no world map to train on with an Inn near. And I dunno, it just felt empty. Despite a good flow and effective enogh gameplay. Check this out if you wanna play all JRPGs or if you like the show.
