Gauntlet Dark Legacy is the follow-up to Gauntlet Legends and another installment in the long-running Gauntlet series of hack-and-slash action games. As with all the Gauntlet games, you play a medieval fantasy character who, along with allies if you have them, fights his or her way through hordes of evil creatures on the never ending quest for more gold and perhaps even an eventual goal. This version contains the characters and levels from Gauntlet Legends, plus the new characters and levels from the Dark Legacy arcade game, with a few extra levels thrown in. There are eight characters to initially choose from: the mighty Warrior, the deadly Valkyrie, the quick-footed Archer, the powerful Wizard, the spellcasting Sorceress, the stalwart Knight, the valiant Dwarf, and the chaotic Jester. Although there are similarities between characters from the two games, each character looks and plays differently. In addition, there are eight alternative-modes for these characters to unlock, plus dozens of secret characters to obtain. With a multi-tap, up to four players can play, with rules governing how much they can hurt each other. Unlike the original Gauntlets, the levels you'll face take place in various terrain from forests to mountains to volcanic plains. Many of the monsters are familiar to old fans of the series, but there are some new blood among the ranks of evil, including some rather large foes. Less

A little too "Gauntlet", but it's Gauntlet

First note: I was playing this on the GBA, so I am judging it knowing that this is probably pretty "lamed down" from what the consoles could have been.

Imagine the original Gauntlet (if you are familiar). Put it in an isometric 3D view. That's Dark Legacy for GBA. Or at least as much as I played of it. I am actually not totally familiar with the original past first glances, so more of this game may have been an homage than I realize.

You pick from a standard set of classes. I picked Warrior, as I generally do. You walk around finding monster closets and hitting them with your weapon. The warrior throws his axes, so I don't know what would have been different from playing a different ranged character that might have used magic or arrows. Considering how many enemies there are, it's better to stay back anyways. You constantly fire, so you just mow the enemies down in pretty much one hit each, get to the spawn point, destroy that, rinse, repeat.

Based on the original and a PS2 version I played years ago, I knew to expect some sort of semi-basic, repetitive grind-fest, but this might …

Based on the original and a PS2 version I played years ago, I knew to expect some sort of semi-basic, repetitive grind-fest, but this might have been a little too basic. There is leveling, but it seems to only raise your health. There may be other stats, but they are not detailed, so again, I don't know how any other character could have been different. You get a power move every now and then, but that's about it.

It's fun enough if you can get past how mindless it is, but the worst part, and almost a game-killer, is how slow you move. You craaaawl around the map, and with the branching paths leading you all over, it's a huge pain when you find out you went the wrong way. Or if you are like me and want to clear the map so you know you got everything, it just takes forever. I would probably keep playing it bit by bit if it weren't so annoying to walk around, but for now, I'm just going to walk away. I was hoping something would change and get more interesting, but it didn't seem to be happening. I'm still putting it on my list to check back into someday if I get around to it.
