A truly amazing game. Deep and rewarding. If you stick with it, you'll never forget your first ascension (which may take years).
I go through phases of being punished by this game. It's like an old addiction that you thought you had weaned yourself off, but once every so often you succumb to a relapse.
The benchmark for purist masochistic old school dungeon crawlers. You will die a lot, you will have no idea what to do, your eyes will glaze over when trying to comprehend the guidebook / manual, and you will ask yourself "what is the point of this?", "what is all all this stuff?", "what do I do with it?", "why am i playing this?", then you will die again.
Current relapse has led me to iNethack2 (a very decent iPad version of Nethack 3.4.3), but there are plenty of versions around for Mac / PC which are very good (some are more purist, than others, but nearly all work on the Nethack 3.4.3 code).
